The GCL Phillies beat the Pirates 4-2 Monday and are in a virtual tie with the Blue Jays for first place.

Technically, the GCL Phillies are percentage points behind the Blue Jays in the Northwest Division, but their win Monday over the Buccos, combined with a Blue Jays loss puts them in a virtual tie for the top spot.

Cole Stobbe and Malvin Matos homered for the GCL Phillies as part of the ten hits that the Phillies collected to beat the Pirates 4-2 Monday. Matos and Stobbe went back-to-back in a four-run fourth inning, with Matos hitting a two-run home run and Stobbe blasting a solo shot. Josh Stephen had an RBI single to score Edwin Rodriguez later in the inning to put the Phillies up 4-0.

Stobbe, Rodriguez and Daniel Brito each had two hits in the game.

Will Stewart (2-2) threw five shutout innings, giving up just three hits and a walk, while striking out four batters to get the win. Jose Nin threw a scoreless ninth inning to record his sixth save of the season. Nin has now thrown 14 2/3 innings over six appearances without allowing an earned run for the GCL Phillies this season.

The Phillies have just nine games remaining in the regular season, with four of them being against the Blue Jays, two at home and two on the road. The two teams wrap up the regular season next Wednesday and Thursday with a home-and-home series beginning at Dunedin Wednesday afternoon.
