Reading lost to Akron 4-1 Tuesday night, lowering their August record to 11-10.

A lot of teams would enjoy an 11-10 record in August. In Reading though, the team with professional baseball's best record, wants more than that. A 4-1 loss at Akron Tuesday dropped their division lead to 2 1/2 games.

The Fightin Phils (82-46) have lost three straight games as the Akron RubberDucks (67-60) won 4-1 on Tuesday night. Even with their recent slow down and the division lead down to 2 1/2 games, Reading’s magic number to clinch a playoff spots is three with Hartford losing to Binghamton.

Jordan Smith continued his hot-hitting for the RubberDucks as he ripped a two-run double off Mark Leiter (6-3) in the bottom of the third to give Akron a 2-0 lead.  Smith advanced to third on a fielding error by Andrew Pullin. Eric Hasse grounded out to shortstop, which allowed Smith to score and give Akron a 3-0 lead.

Scott Kingery delivered a one-out RBI single off RubberDucks starter Michael Peoples (10-6) in the top of the fourth to cut Akron’s lead to 3-1.  Todd Hankins hit a RBI triple with two outs in the bottom of the sixth off Leiter Jr. to give Akron a 4-1 lead.  Leiter Jr. left the game after the triple and Victor Arano came in to pitch, striking out Ivan Castillo to end the inning.

Arano retired the side in the bottom of the seventh, and Gregory Infante did the same thing in the bottom of the eighth against the RubberDucks.  Cameron Hill retired the side in the top of the ninth to earn his first save for Akron.
