The GCL Phillies are one win away from winning the Gulf Coast League Championship

The Gulf Coast League Championship is on the schedule for today, with the Phillies hosting the Cardinals in the deciding game of the three-game set. Each team has won a game on their home field.

The GCL Phillies used a three-run fifth inning on Tuesday to tie their GCL Championship Series with the Cardinals at one game each.

The Phillies had runners on first and second with two outs in the fifth when Malvin Matos doubled to right, driving in one run. After a pitching change, Jhailyn Ortiz delivered a two-run single to push the Phillies up 3-2.

The Cardinals had taken a quick 2-0 lead in the first on two unearned runs, thanks to a fielding error by Daniel Brito and a throwing error by outfielder Josh Stephen. The Cardinals had threats in both the eighth and ninth innings, but a groundball double-play thrown by Randy Alcantara got them out of the jam in the eighth and another double-play, this time thrown by Jose Nin worked the Phillies out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the ninth.

Nick Fanti got the win, throwing 5 1/3 innings in relief of Kevin Gowdy, and allowing just three hits and no walks. Fanti struck out six. Nin earned the save, his second of the GCL Playoffs.

The series started in Jupiter, Florida, home of the Cardinals, who won the opener 3-0.
