Jeremy Hellickson accepting the Phillies qualifying offer brought back memories of another pitcher who surprised the Phillies

The Phillies didn't really expect pitcher Jeremy Hellickson to accept their qualifying offer. When he did, it brought back memories of another pitcher who surprised the Phillies by accepting an offer they put out there.

While the Phillies needed a veteran starter and Jeremy Hellickson certainly fits the bill quite nicely, they really didn't expect that he was going to accept their one-year, $17.2-million offer. With Scott Boras as his agent, the Phillies figured that Hellickson would seek more years and more guaranteed money elsewhere and hit the free agent market. In fact, the Phillies were kind of salivating over the potential to have another first round draft pick next June, but Hellickson and Boras put a stop to all of that when they said "yes" to the offer.

By accepting the offer, Hellickson is back on the 40-man roster with that one-year deal guaranteed and the Phillies don't get an additional first round pick next June. They also have one less roster spot available to protect a young player from the Rule 5 Draft.

Hellickson's surprise decision brought back memories of another starter who surprised the Phillies.

Go back to December of 2003. The Phillies were coming off an 86-win season that saw them finish third in the NL East, and were thinking of ways to improve the club for the 2004 season, their first in Citizens Bank Park. Prior to the 2003 season, the Phillies had acquired Kevin Millwood from Atlanta as the Braves looked to trim salary. The Phillies sent catcher Johnny Estrada to the Braves and Millwood went on to win 14 games - of course, he lost 12 - and post a 4.01 ERA with the Phillies. The big highlight to Millwood's season was pitching a no-hitter against San Francisco on April 27th. In his last five starts though, Millwood struggled mightily and went 0-3 in his last five starts, two of which were in key games against the Florida Marlins as the Phillies fought for a potential wild card. In his final outing of the season, Millwood left the mound with fans at Veterans Stadium booing loudly. He proceeded to toss his glove and hat into the crowd in some strange sort of gesture.

After the season, Millwood's contract was up and he wanted something in the neighborhood of five years at around $15-million per season. The Phillies countered with a three-year offer at $10-million per year. Millwood rejected the deal and the Phillies went out and acquired Eric Milton from Minnesota, in essence to take Millwood's place in the rotation. Milton was guaranteed about $9-million for 2004, right around what Millwood made the previous season, so the money seemed to be a wash. The Phillies had also gone out and gotten Billy Wagner to be their closer, with Wagner set to make $8-million in 2004.

The moves left the Phillies with little breathing room salary wise and they figured on Millwood being elsewhere in 2004.

The arbitration system and free agency were different back in 2003. Free agency was in its infancy and the system allowed teams to offer salary arbitration to a player much like they do with a qualifying offer today. If the player accepted arbitration, they were considered signed and didn't hit the free agent market. If they rejected arbitration, the team got a compensatory draft pick if he signed elsewhere.

Phillies GM Ed Wade figured that Millwood, considering the type of money he was seeking, would reject arbitration and hit the free agent market. After all, in arbitration, Millwood would likely only get around $11-million and a one-year deal. Millwood, who was 28 at the time, was seeking more per year and more years and seemed adamant about getting the money and years that he wanted when he rejected the Phillies three-year deal. With that in mind, Wade offered Millwood arbitration.

He said "yes."

Wade insisted that the Phillies were fine with that decision, even though he admitted that the move put the Phillies significantly over budget for the 2004 season. Millwood was awarded $11-million and went 9-6 with a 4.85 ERA in 2004 and the Phillies again finished 86-76, ten games out of first. Manager Larry Bowa was fired with two games left to play in the season, and Gary Varsho took over for the final two games.

Millwood went on to sign with the Indians for $7-million for the 2005 season. The right-hander went 9-11 with a 2.86 ERA with Cleveland and parlayed that into a five-year, $53-million deal with the Rangers. Unfortunately, Millwood was never the same pitcher and went 48-46 with a 4.57 ERA in four seasons with Texas, although he did go 13-10 with a 3.67 ERA in 2009. The Rangers were able to ship him to Baltimore in December of 2009. The Orioles gave up Chris Ray and Ben Snyder, two players who never really did much for Texas, but all they got out of Millwood in 2010 was a 4-16, 5.10 mark.

In 2011, Millwood was again a free agent and signed with the Yankees, but was released at the end of April after pitching at Double-A Trenton and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. From there, Millwood signed with Boston and posted a 4.28 ERA at Pawtucket before again being released. The Rockies signed him and he made nine starts and was 4-3, 4.31 with Colorado. 2012 would be Millwood's final season and he pitched for Seattle, going 6-12 with a 4.25 ERA.

Hellickson's acceptance is different in that the Phillies were going to have to find a replacement for him either through free agency or trade. They hadn't made an Eric Milton-type move to replace Hellickson in the rotation as they did with Millwood. It's also different financially, in that the Phillies have the money to spend on Hellickson. In fact, they have even more money to spend this offseason, so the deal isn't an issue financially for them.

Besides, the Phillies might still get a player for Hellickson, if they were to trade him mid-season, which could very well happen. If Hellickson pitches well and the Phillies young pitchers continue to progress, Hellickson could be a big name on the trade market come July and the Phillies could replace him with another young starter in their rotation for the rest of the season.

The times and situations were different, but both Millwood and Hellickson surprised the Phillies when they accepted an offer that nobody figured that they would.
