An injury to pitcher Matt Harrison lit the way for the Phillies to accelerate their rebuilding plan

It was a transaction that most Phillies fans didn't pay much attention to, but it opened a huge door that the Phillies could march through to make their rebuilding plan move a little faster.

While Matt Harrison never threw a pitch for the Phillies, his back injury and the Phillies willingness to take on his contract were keys for the Phillies in stepping up the pace of their rebuild effort. Here is basically how Harrison came to help the Phillies of the future.

First, some background on Harrison. From 2010 through 2012, Matt Harrison went 35-22 for Texas, with a 3.56 ERA, working as both a starter and a reliever. In 2012, he made 32 starts, was an all-star and finished eighth in Cy Young balloting for the season, with a 3.29 ERA and an 18-11 record. Harrison had just turned 27 in September of that season and the Rangers rewarded him with a five-year, $55-million deal that held a vesting option for 2018. The move allowed both sides to avoid arbitration and gave the solid young pitcher both a reward for how he had pitched and some stability for the next five seasons.

Less than three-months after signing the deal, that door that opened for the Phillies was first unlocked when Harrison was placed on the DL in early April of 2013 with what was termed an inflamed nerve in his lower back. Six weeks later, he was transferred to the 60-day DL and pitched in rehab assignments in July and August, but didn't pitch in the majors again that season.

There was off-season back surgery and another placement on the DL just prior to the start of the 2014 season as that door was opening more than just slightly for the Phillies. After all, Texas had assembled a good team and was looking to get back to the playoffs where they were in 2010 through 2012 when Harrison was at his peak form. Those first two years, they lost in the World Series and wound up losing in the AL Wild Card game in 2012. In 2013, they missed the playoffs, but still won 91 games without Harrison, so they were hopeful.

Harrison was healthy enough to be activated from the DL by late April and after three starts, had a 2.87 ERA for Texas; all looked right with Harrison and the future looked good for the Rangers. Then, in his fourth start of the season, something wasn't right and Harrison exited after just 1 2/3 innings. The door creaked open a little wider when Harrison went on the 15-day DL in mid-May and was moved to the 60-day DL a month later with that ever persistent lower back inflammation.

More surgery followed the 2014 season, which saw Texas drop from 91 wins in 2013 to just 67 wins the following season.

In 2015, the door opened as widely as possible for Philadelphia when Harrison started the season on the 15-day DL and was quickly moved to the 60-day DL. He returned to the mound in early July and got hammered by the Diamondbacks. His next start was almost two weeks later and he threw six shutout innings against Colorado to give the Rangers some hope, but six days later, the Yankees hit him for six earned runs in six innings of work.

All the while, Texas was hanging in as part of the AL West, but with Yu Darvish out for the season and Harrison shaky at best, the Rangers absolutely needed to add a big arm to their rotation. At a time when the Rangers had figured to have a dominating rotation with Darvish, Harrison and Yovani Gallardo leading their rotation, they had a huge hole to fill.

Meanwhile, in Philadelphia, Cole Hamels was being shopped around with some intriguing offers coming in for the lefty. Because of the injuries to their staff, Texas had the biggest, most glaring need for Hamels and they decided to go all in and make the Phillies an offer they couldn't refuse. Texas, who had been offering packages that included either/or type options for the Phillies when it came to their top prospects, blinked. They offered up Nick WilliamsJorge Alfaro and pitchers Alec AsherJerad Eickhoff and Jake Thompson for Hamels and reliever Jake Diekman, with one caveat. The Phillies had to take the battered and beaten Harrison and the roughly $34-million remaining on Harrison's contract to make the deal work financially for the Rangers.

Dealing Hamels was much less about money than it was about restocking the farm system with young talent, so the Phillies took on Harrison as part of the trade and he was immediately placed on the 15-day DL with lower back inflammation. One month later, he was moved to the 60-day DL to clear a roster spot on the 40-man and allow the Phillies to make the September call-ups that they wanted to make. When the 2016 season opened, Harrison was back on the DL, this time being placed immediately on the 60-day DL and he never did come off until the season was over.

Just as they moved him to the 60-day DL late in the 2015 season to clear a 40-man roster spot, the Phillies again used Harrison to clear a 40-man roster spot, this time to protect an additional player from the Rule 5 Draft, when they released him. Again, the money part isn't the problem, since the Phillies don't have huge long-term contracts hanging over their heads and Harrison is down to a manageable $15.2-million worth of contract ($13.2-million for 2017 and a $2-million buyout on 2018) left for the Phillies to eat. The additional roster spot is more important than a pitcher who is now 31 with a chronic back issue that will likely never allow him to throw another pitch.

Without the injury to Harrison, the Rangers likely wouldn't have gone all-in for Hamels 16 months ago. One and perhaps two of the players that they included in the deal wouldn't have been there for the Phillies to grab and the other offers that were made for Hamels didn't measure up to the one that they ultimately got in the deal with Texas.

The Hamels deal goes down as one that helped both teams. Texas has rebounded nicely with Hamels in the rotation and Darvish returning to form. In each of the past two seasons, they've made it to the ALDS, only to be eliminated. In Philadelphia, Asher and Eickhoff have already started to prove themselves as valuable parts of the rotation and Thompson made his MLB debut last season and could well become the next big thing in Philadelphia. Williams and Alfaro are knocking on the door, with both having bright futures in Philadelphia, making it likely that Harrison will be the only member of the deal that won't have played at Citizens Bank Park.

It was a win-win deal that likely would have never been made had Harrison's back not given out shortly after signing a bright, shiny new contract. He was destined to be a perennial all-star and potential Cy Young nominee, but none of that happened. Instead, he became the guy who helped the Phillies to hasten their rebuilding effort when the Rangers gave in, included more prospects than they originally planned to and both sides used some creative accounting to make the deal work.

As an aside, the Phillies collected a chunk of Harrison's 2015 and 2016 salaries back because of an insurance policy that was in place when he got hurt. They'll recoup some of the remaining money as well, but not as much, since they released Harrison before the end of the deal, limiting the amount that they would get in insurance payments.
