When Michael Saunders passed his physical and officially signed with the Phillies, pitcher Severino Gonzalez was removed from the 40-man roster as the Phillies designated him for assignment to clear room for Saunders. The Phillies now have 10 days to either get Gonzalez through waivers, trade him or release him. If he clears waivers, the Phillies could assign the right-hander to Lehigh Valley.
http://www.scout.com/mlb/phillies/story/1729482-pbi-annual-members-get-s...Gonzalez, 24, pitched in 27 games with the Phillies last season, all of them in relief, posting a 5.60 ERA. In 2015, Gonzalez started seven games for the Phillies and struggled horribly, finishing at 3-3, but with a 7.92 ERA. Overall, he has pitched in 34 major league games, has a record of 4-5 and an ERA of 6.68 for Philadelphia. Even with the struggles, Gonzalez has been able to post a strong 8.5 strikeouts per nine innings and has walked just 1.9 batters per nine innings.
Control has been a hallmark of Gonzalez since signing with the Phillies as an amateur free agent in 2011. Coming up through the Phillies organization, Gonzalez has posted a combined 1.5 walks per nine, while striking out 7.3 batters per nine innings over six minor league seasons.
The fact that Gonzalez has struggled in the majors is a little surprising, given his success in the minors. In 2013, Gonzalez was named the organization's Paul Owens Award recipient as the best minor league pitcher in the organization. His 3.32 ERA in the minors comes as both a starter and reliever. He's also posted a 1.11 WHIP in the Phillies minor league organization.
