Series Preview: Mets Come To Town

The Phillies turned around their road trip ever so slightly with a three game sweep of the Mets at Shea Stadium last weekend. Now, the Phillies hope to continue their current run with a four game series with the Mets at Veterans Stadium. The series marks the final games for Mike Piazza at Veterans Stadium, which is notable since Piazza grew up near Philly and attended games at The Vet as a kid.

He did it again. That's right, Jim Thome came through for the Phillies. An RBI single in the game started the Phillies in their game against the Expos. Then, with his 39th home run of the year, Jim Thome hit a bomb to dead center in Veterans Field.

The Phillies are coming off of a series sweep of the New York Mets. They are looking to sweep them in this series because they have little room for mistakes as they are tied with Florida in the NL Wild Card Standings.

The Fightin's also added some depth in their bullpen with the acquisition of Valerie De Los Santos. They also called up pitchers Josh Hancock, Ryan Madsen, Geoff Geary and third basemen Travis Chapman.

Pat Burrell has been swinging the bat well lately and as usual he is killing the Mets. In his career Burrell is batting .314 with 17 dingers and 49 runs batted in against the Mets. This year he only has 4 homeruns against them accompanied by 11 RBI's. Don't be surprised if Burrell hits at least 2 homeruns this series. Actually, expect it. Although he has not hit for average against Leiter (.206 AVG.) he does have 3 HR's and 6 RBI's in 29 at bats. Burrell is batting .296 against tonight's pitcher, Tom Glavine with only 1 HR. A good stat; Glavine has walked Burrell 8 times in 27 at bats which averages out to almost a walk every 3-4 at bats.
