The Reading Fightin Phils (2-3) got their bats going for a third straight game as they beat the New Hampshire Fisher Cats 10-5 on Tuesday night. Brandon Leibrandt (1-0) picked up his first Double-A win in the process while the offense recorded 17 hits.
Reading continued their hot-hitting from a night ago as they took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second. Jiandido Tromp tripled off Fisher Cats starter Shane Dawson (0-1) and then scored on a two-run home run by Angelo Mora. New Hampshire tied the game at 2-2 off Leibrandt in the bottom of the second. The Fisher Cats scored runs off an error and a sacrifice fly.
Reading scored two more runs off Dawson to take a 4-2 lead in the top of the fourth. Mitch Walding delivered an RBI triple to score Harold Martinez, and Tromp doubled to score Walding. Reading extended their lead to 8-2 as they scored four runs in the top of the fifth against Dawson.
Joel Fisher led off the inning with a single, and scored on a two-run home run by Scott Kingery. Andrew Pullin followed with a home run, before Carlos Tocci reached on a base-hit. Martinez singled off Dawson that chased him out of the game, in favor of Chris Rowley. Walding greeted Rowley with a sacrifice fly for the fourth run of the inning.
Leibrandt left the game after five innings as he allowed two unearned runs off three hits and one walk with three strikeouts. Tom Windle entered the game to pitch the bottom of the sixth and ran into trouble, allowing three runs, and dropping Reading’s lead to 8-5. Windle faced eight batters and recorded just two outs. Yacksel Rios entered the game to face Tim Lopes with the bases loaded, and struck him out to end the inning.
Rowley pitched three scoreless innings in relief for New Hampshire, before Luis Santos entered the game in the top of the eighth and allowed two runs as Reading took a 10-5 lead. Both runs came with two outs as Tocci and Martinez hit back-to-back RBI singles. Martinez recorded the first four-hit game of the Fightin Phils season.
Rios pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings in relief with three strikeouts. Miguel Nunez came on to pitch the bottom of the ninth inning, as Reading locked up their first series win of the 2017 season.
