Tigers Hold Down Phils for 5-1 Win

The Phillies offensive struggles continued as the final week of exhibition play got under way. Five Tigers pitchers held the Phillies to just seven hits in the Tigers 5-1 win. The game featured four hit batters and a Tigers pitcher being ejected from the game.

Vicente Padilla ran into sixth inning trouble and surrendered a bases loaded triple to Carlos Guillen as the Tigers picked up a 5-1 Grapefruit League win over the Phillies.

Ricky Ledee launched a solo homerun in the second inning to give the Phillies a 1-0 lead. Vicente Padilla was breezing along through five innings as he was shutting out the Tigers. In the sixth, he ran into problems and loaded the bases before Guillen's hit put Detroit up 3-1. The Tigers also scored two runs off Billy Wagner in the top of the ninth.

The game featured four hit batters and the ejection of Tigers starter Nate Cornejo in the bottom of the sixth inning. Cornejo was tossed after hitting Ricky Ledee with a pitch to start the bottom of the inning. Cornejo had hit Todd Pratt earlier in the game and Padilla hit Carlos Pena. Rheal Cormier, who pitched two shutout innings, hit Brandon Inge.

Padilla finished with six innings pitches, allowing three runs and five hits. He also issued one walk and didn't strike out any hitters.
