Phillies Battle For 5-4 Win In Pittsburgh

The script written over the winter was for the bullpen to take over late in the game. The combination of Rheal Cormier, Roberto Hernandez and Tim Worrell would get the Phillies to the ninth for Billy Wagner Time. Consider the script well written and working. The bullpen got it done as the Phillies came from behind to beat Pittsburgh 5-4.

Billy Wagner's Phillies debut turned out to be three strikeouts to retire the side in the bottom of the ninth for his first save of the season. Jack Wilson did sneak in a single to left field with one out, but it didn't phase Wagner or the Phillies as they beat Pittsburgh 5-4 to gain a split in the first two games of the series.

Tim Worrell was able to hold down the Pirates in the eighth, setting up Wagner for the save. Worrell allowed two hits, but no runs. The key play of the inning was Raul Mondesi leading off with a double to left. Mondesi tried to stretch the play into a triple, but Pat Burrell hit cutoff man Jimmy Rollins, who fired a strike to David Bell to nail Mondesi at third. Burrell earlier in the game made nice plays on balls hit to the corner and also made a sliding catch as part of a strong defensive night.

Burrell also contributed offensively, going 2-4 with 2 RBI on the night. Burrell's first RBI gave the Phillies a 1-0 lead as he singled home Placido Polanco in the third inning. Burrell is now hitting .625 on the season. Pittsburgh came back in the bottom of the inning with two runs. Jason Kendall doubled to score Tike Redman and later scored on an RBI single from Mondesi giving the Pirates a 2-1 lead.

The Phillies reclaimed the lead in the fifth. Burrell singled home Marlon Byrd and left runners on first and third for Bobby Abreu. Abreu grounded out, but Byrd scored on the play as the Phillies went ahead 3-2.

Randy Wolf seemingly hit a wall in the bottom of the sixth inning. Craig Wilson led off the inning with a solo homerun, his second in as many games and suddenly, the game was tied again. After getting one out, Wolf walked J.J. Davis and exited in favor of Rheal Cormier, who gave up an RBI double to Jack Wilson as the see-saw contest went in favor of the Pirates once again. Cormier stayed on to pitch the seventh and gave up a leadoff single to pinch hitter Bobby Hill, who was then thrown out trying to steal second. Cormier retired Redman and Kendall to end the inning with Pittsburgh still holding on to a 4-3 lead.

The winning rally came in the Phillies half of the eighth when Brian Boehringer gave up a leadoff single to Mike Lieberthal. Pinch runner Doug Glanville went to third on Jimmy Rollins' single to right field, giving the Phillies runners at the corners with nobody out. Boehringer then issued walks to Bell and pinch hitter Ricky Ledee, leaving the game tied with the bases still loaded. Brian Meadows then came on and got Byrd to ground into a fielder's choice, but Rollins scored the go ahead run. Placido Polanco then lined into a double play to end the inning with the Phillies leading 5-4.

After Mondesi's base running blunder to leadoff the eighth, Craig Wilson delivered a single, but was quickly erased on a ground ball double play.

Wagner finished off the Pirates in the ninth to record his first save as a Phillie and the 226th of his career.

The two teams will wrap up the series in Pittsburgh Thursday night when Vicente Padilla battles Ryan Vogelsong at PNC Park in Pittsburgh.
