Preview: Phillies Open Series Against World Champs

The Fightin' Phils will open up their first National League East series against the World Champion Florida Marlins on Friday evening. Larry Bowa's club looks to improve upon last year's 6-13 record against the Fish. Friday night will also be the night that the Marlins get some jewelry; their 2003 World Series Championship rings will be handed out prior to the game.

Pitching Probables
Friday, April 9, 2004 – 7:35PM EST

FLA. – C. Pavano (0-0, 0.00 ERA) vs. PHI. – E. Milton (0-0, 0.00 ERA)

Saturday, April 10, 2004 – 3:05PM EST

FLA. – D. Oliver (0-0, 0.00 ERA) vs. PHI. – B. Myers (0-0, 0.00 ERA)

Sunday, April 11, 2004 – 3:05PM EST

FLA. - J. Beckett (0-0, 1.29 ERA) vs. PHI. – K. Millwood (0-1, 0.00 ERA)

Phillies send out the southpaw Eric Milton to kick off the series, whom they acquired in the off-season via trade with the Minnesota Twins. The left-hander started only three games last year due to the knee surgery he underwent prior to spring training. He will be opposing Carl Pavano, who was 1-2 in 2003 against Philadelphia with a 5.46 ERA.

Brett Myers will match up against Florida's Darren Oliver in the Saturday afternoon matinee. Oliver, who comes to the Marlins after pitching for the Rockies, compiled an 11.25 ERA in one game against the Phillies last year. He lasted just four innings and surrendered eight runs in his only appearances. Brett Myers didn't have much success against the Florida Marlins during the 2003 campaign, owning a 7.78 ERA and a 0-3 record.

The last game of the series, which begins at 3:05PM Eastern on Sunday, features both team's aces. Josh Beckett, the winning pitcher in Game 7 of the World Series for the Marlins, will be sent to the mound after posting a no decision and allowing just one run over seven innings during his opening day start against Montreal.

In Kevin Millwood's first start, Philadelphia's season opener, he put together an extremely solid outing, but that was hampered by the Phillies inability to score runs. The club stranded ten runners in scoring position. Both pitchers will be looking to earn their first win of the season.
