Thome, Wagner Deliver as Phils Beat Expos 4-2

Jim Thome and Pat Burrell both delivered their first homeruns of the season and Billy Wagner delivered a 101 mile per hour fastball in the Phillies 4-2 win. Actually, the game shouldn't have been as close as it was, but the Phillies blew some chances with runners on base. Still, they delivered a lot of excitement and have won two in a row for the first time this season.

Suddenly, the Phillies seem to have turned things around in a very quick time.

After a Tony Batista homerun put the Expos up 1-0 in the second inning, the Phillies didn't waste any time mounting a comeback. Jim Thome led off the bottom of the inning with a single off Livan Hernandez (0-2) and Pat Burrell hit a ball deep into the left-center field seats for his first homerun of the season.

It didn't look like the Phillies rally would end there. Back-to-back singles from Mike Lieberthal and Marlon Byrd and a walk to David Bell loaded the bases with nobody out. Hernandez then struck out pitcher Eric Milton, got Jimmy Rollins to hit a weak pop-up to third and got Placido Polanco to ground out to third to get out of any further trouble.

Hernandez got himself into trouble again in the third inning. A leadoff walk to Bobby Abreu and another single from Thome put runners at the corners. Burrell then knocked in his third run of the night with an RBI single and Thome advanced to third. Again, Hernandez worked out of trouble when he got Lieberthal on a short fly ball and Byrd hit into an inning ending double play, but the Phillies had expanded their lead to 3-1.

Milton (1-0) looked strong, but ran out of gas in the sixth inning. With two outs, Orlando Cabrera singled and Batista doubled to make it a 3-2 game. The Phillies bullpen got busy, but Milton got Brad Wilkerson to fly out to end the inning. Tim Worrell came on in the seventh and pitched two shutout innings for the Phillies.

Thome's homerun, which landed in the first row of seats just beyond the right field fence, was his first of the season. It was also Thome's fourth hit of the night, matching his career high and gave the Phillies an insurance run with a 4-2 lead.

If Thome's homerun got the crowd fired up, Billy Wagner pushed them over the edge. Wagner's first pitch of the inning was 99 miles per hour. His second was 100 miles per hour and later in the inning, he reached 101 miles per hour. Wagner struck out Wilkerson and Juan Rivera and retired Ron Calloway with no trouble to record his third save of the season. Wagner has closed each of the Phillies wins.

The two teams will play again Saturday afternoon when Kevin Millwood (0-2, 3.75) goes against John Patterson (1-0, 0.00).
