Phillies Play Longball To Beat Montreal 6-3

Suddenly, all is well at Citizens Bank Park. The Phillies used four homeruns, a strong outing from ace Kevin Millwood and the usual heat from Billy Wagner to win their second in a row against Montreal and third in a row overall. Homeruns from Pat Burrell, David Bell, Bobby Abreu and Placido Polanco gave the Phillies all the runs they would need.

It's looking like the ball will carry very well to left field at Citizens Bank Park. The Phillies hit four homeruns Saturday, all to left field.

The barrage started in the bottom of the first when Polanco lifted a shot into the left center field seats and put the Phillies up 1-0 off starter John Patterson (1-1, 4.09). Patterson was unscored upon in his first start for the Expos, but was hit hard in his outing against the Phillies.

Before the first inning was over, Pat Burrell would blast a Patterson fastball off the fair screen in left field. The only question was whether the ball would stay fair. It wound up hitting the fair pole about two-thirds of the way up the screen and the Phillies expanded their lead to 3-0.

Kevin Millwood (1-2, 3.79) was sharp in his third start of the season. Millwood allowed three earned runs on the day, one on an RBI single by Brad Wilkerson and two more runs in the fourth on a homerun by Brian Schneider. The homerun by Schneider tied the game at 3-3.

Burrell was in the middle of the scoring again in the Phillies half of the fourth inning. Burrell led off with a single and scored when David Bell, hitting sixth in the order, lifted a shot into the left field seats that put the Phillies back in front 5-3. Burrell was 2-3 with a walk and is now hitting .351 with 2 homeruns and 11 RBI.

Just for added insurance, Bobby Abreu hit his second homerun of the season in the eighth. Abreu went the other way with his homerun, depositing it in the flower bed between the left field fence and the first row of seats.

Billy Wagner came on for the third game in a row and simply blew away the Expos in the bottom of the ninth. Wagner struck out two and saved his fourth game of the season, accounting for each of the Phillies wins.

The two teams will play the final game of the series Sunday afternoon when Randy Wolf (0-1, 6.10) faces Claudio Vargas (1-1, 2.25).
