Glanville's Walk-Off Homerun Sweeps Expos

The Phillies came from a 3-0 deficit to beat Montreal and sweep their three game series with the Expos at Citizens Bank Park. Again, long balls made the difference as Doug Glanville took a Rocky Biddle pitch into the left field seats to give the Phillies a 5-4 win in the bottom of the ninth.

It looked like it might be just one of those days for the Phillies.

Randy Wolf was hammered for three first inning runs as Orlando Cabrera and Brad Wilkerson both homered for Montreal. Wolf looked unsettled, but came back to put Montreal down in order in the second inning and battled his way through six tough innings, holding the Expos to just their three early runs.

The Phillies offense chipped away. They scored a second inning run when Jim Thome doubled and moved to third on a wild pitch. After a walk to Pat Burrell, Mike Lieberthal grounded into a double play, but Thome scored making it a 3-1 game. In the fourth, the Phillies loaded the bases and Expos' starter Claudio Vargas walked David Bell to force home another run and make it a 3-2 game. Vargas lasted through the first hitter of the fifth inning before manager Frank Robinson had seen enough and lifted Vargas, who had pitched to a 2-2 count on Placido Polanco. Jeremy Fikac came on to get Polanco and Bobby Abreu, but Thome launched a shot into the right field seats to bring the Phillies all the way back and give them a 4-3 lead.

Wolf would make it through the sixth before giving way to Rheal Cormier. Catcher Brian Schneider greeted Cormier with a long triple to center field. Schneider scored on pinch-hitter Ron Calloway's ground ball to second base and the game was tied 4-4.

Cormier gave way to Tim Worrell, who pitched a perfect eighth inning. In the ninth, closer Billy Wagner entered his fourth straight game and put the Expos down, allowing just one hit in the inning.

The Expos also turned to their closer, Rocky Biddle, to pitch the ninth. Doug Glanville, who had entered the game as part of a double switch when Cormier entered, was the first to face Biddle. With the count 2-2, Glanville lined a fastball to left field. The ball carried just deep enough to clear the fence and land a couple rows deep in the seats and give the Phillies a 5-4 win in the series finale.

The sweep gives the Phillies a four game winning streak and a 4-1 record at Citizens Bank Park. After an off day on Monday, the Phillies will host the division leading Florida Marlins, who were swept by the Braves over the weekend. Tuesday's matchup has Vicente Padilla (0-1, 4.91) facing Dontrelle Willis (2-0, 0.00). Besides being undefeated and not having allowed an earned run this season, Willis is 6-6 at the plate for the Marlins this season.
