Here We Go Again. Marlins Beat Phillies 3-1

If you're keeping score at home, the Marlins have now beaten the Phillies 16 out of the last 18 games between the two teams. At least the Phillies can say that they lost to one of the best in Dontrelle Willis, who still boasts a 0.00 ERA and now has a 3-0 record. Early struggles by Vicente Padilla put the Phillies behind and they never caught up.

Actually, the Phillies were lucky that they weren't further behind the Marlins early in the game. Juan Pierre led off the game with a single, which is never a good sign. Before the inning was over, Mike Lowell would drive in Pierre and the Marlins would have a 1-0 lead against Vicente Padilla (0-2). More bad news came when Dontrelle Willis (3-0) came out with blazing stuff and put the Phillies down in order in the bottom of the first inning.

Bad news? More came in the second when the Marlins got another run off of Padilla. David Bell's throwing error put Mike Redmond on second with nobody out. Alex Gonzalez' ground out moved Redmond to third and one out later, it was the same nemesis. Juan Pierre picked up his second hit of the night and drove in Redmond for a 2-0 Marlins lead. Bell would finish the night with two errors, but he also made a great play on a bunt by Pierre that kept the speedy center fielder from reaching first again later in the game.

Padilla regrouped and pitched 6.1 innings, allowing two earned runs.

While struggling in the field, ironically, David Bell reached on an error by right fielder Miguel Cabrera in the fourth inning. The error allowed Jim Thome to score the Phillies only run of the night.

Armando Benitez pitched a perfect ninth inning to record his seventh save of the season.

The Phillies lineup had a bit of a different look. Struggling right fielder Bobby Abreu, didn't start the game, but did pinch-hit in the ninth and flied out. Marlon Byrd also sat out with Doug Glanville getting the start in center field. Glanville finished the night 1-3.

The two teams will play the second game of their three game series Wednesday night when Carl Pavano (1-0, 1.98) will oppose Eric Milton (1-0, 3.27).
