Even Wagner Can't Stop Marlins; Florids Wins In 12

The Phillies battled back against the Marlins and looked like they had everything under control. Then, the bullpen fell apart as the Marlins swam back to send the game into extra innings and eventually, they walked away with an 8-7 win over the Phillies. The loss means the Phils have now lost 17 of their last 19 against Florida.

Juan Pierre scored on a sacrifice fly in the 12th inning to lift the Florida Marlins to an 8-7 win over the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park.

Mike Lowell finished with a career day, going 4-for-6 with three home runs and four RBI as the Marlins captured the first two of this three-game series. Wil Cordero homered and Jeff Conine added three hits for Florida, which has won all five meetings with Philadelphia this season.

Florida has won eight straight and 17 of the last 19 matchups versus the Phillies, dating back to last season. The Marlins are also 8-2 in their last 10 trips to Philly.

Justin Wayne (1-0) got the win with two scoreless innings of relief. Starter Carl Pavano pitched 5 1/3 innings and allowed five runs on nine hits.

Jim Thome and Ricky Ledee both hit two-run homers for the Phillies, who have lost two in a row after a four-game winning streak. Bobby Abreu finished with three hits in a losing cause.

Ryan Madson struck out Hee Seop Choi to start the 12th inning, but the dangerous Pierre drew a walk. Pierre then stole second and took third when Mike Lieberthal's throw sailed into center field. Luis Castillo then lined out to Pat Burrell in left and Pierre beat the throw home for an 8-7 Florida lead.

Wayne then set the Phillies down in order in the home half to preserve his first win of the 2004 season. Madson (0-1) was saddled with the loss, yielding one unearned run in two innings of work.

Lowell belted a home run off the left-field foul pole in the second inning to give Florida the lead. Lowell was the first batter of the inning and crushed Milton's 1-1 pitch to left field.

The Phillies threatened in the fourth but came up short. Abreu stroked a leadoff double past Pierre in center and took third when Thome grounded out to first. He was then stranded when Burrell grounded out and Lieberthal popped out to end the inning.

Philadelphia finally got to Pavano in the sixth, scoring five runs for a 5-1 advantage. Placido Polanco reached on an infield single and went to second when Pavano balked. Abreu was the next batter and hit a ground ball to Lowell, who overthrew Cordero at first to score Polanco.

Pavano appeared rattled and served up a two-run homer to Thome. Burrell then walked and crossed the plate on Lieberthal's double. David Bell followed with a single to bring home Lieberthal for a 5-1 score.

Not to be outdone, the defending champs collected five runs in the seventh to take back the lead. Roberto Hernandez was on the hill and Alex Gonzalez started things with a double. Gonzalez eventually scored two outs later when Castillo reached on Bell's errant throw to first. Miguel Cabrera then singled in Castillo, chasing Hernandez from the game.

Tim Worrell took the mound and was greeted by Lowell's second homer of the night -- a two-run shot to the seats in left field. Cordero was the next batter and gave Florida a 6-5 lead with a solo shot to deep left.

Chad Fox was on the mound for the Marlins in the eighth inning and walked Lieberthal to start the inning. Bell then grounded to move Lieberthal to second and Jimmy Rollins struck out. Ledee, hitting for Worrell, belted a 1-2 pitch over the wall in right field for a 7-6 lead.

Phillies closer Billy Wagner took the hill in the ninth, hoping to shut the door, but Lowell ripped a 3-2 pitch to the stands in left to tie the game. It was the first three-homer game of Lowell's career.

The Phillies wasted a leadoff double by Polanco in the bottom half. After Polanco ripped a two-base hit to left, Abreu flied out and Thome was intentionally walked. Burrell and Lieberthal both popped out to end the frame.

Florida had runners on the corners with two outs in the 11th inning, but Gonzalez grounded into a fielder's choice to end the threat.
