Even Fightin' Phils Come Up Short Against Fish

We probably should have seen this coming. The Phillies frustration with the Marlins boiled over when Brett Myers threw in tight to Alex Gonzalez, sparking a bench clearing brawl. The bout may have spurred the Phillies on, but it didn't make enough of a difference as the Marlins beat the Phillies 9-7 to sweep the three-game series in Philly.

Mike Redmond stroked a solo homerun and a two-run double, as the Marlins completed their third straight three-game sweep of the Phillies with a 9-7 win at Citizens Bank Park.

Mike Lowell added a two-run homer for the Marlins, his fourth in two games.

Darren Oliver earned the win in 5 1/3 innings of work. Oliver (2-1) yielded five runs on six hits and three walks, striking out four.

The Phillies have now lost 18 of the last 20 meetings with the Marlins. The Marlins have swept both three-game series between the teams this season.

"Right now they have the hot hand," Phillies manager Larry Bowa said. "They are playing very well."

The teams cleared their benches in the second inning after a home plate altercation between Phillies catcher Todd Pratt and Marlins shortstop Alex Gonzalez.

Gonzalez was irritated by a high and inside pitch thrown by Phillies starter Brett Myers (0-1). He stepped out of the batter's box and wagged his finger at the righthander before Pratt stepped in and the two squared off. Punches were thrown by each player, but none were landed. Both were ejected from the game.

"As soon as I saw Alex point his finger at my pitcher, I had to handle the situation," Pratt said. "I called fastball away, and Brett threw it middle-in. Why say something? It would be different if it was close. It wasn't close."

The inside pitch followed a one-out homer by Redmond that gave Florida a 1-0 lead.

"There was no doubt in my mind that that was retaliation for the home run," Marlins manager Jack McKeon said.

The altercation seemed to spark the Phillies, who got three consecutive singles from Jim Thome, Pat Burrell and David Bell in the bottom of the second.

Bell's hit to center scored Thome to tie the game. Mike Lieberthal, who came in to replace the ejected Pratt, grounded into a double play after that, but Burrell scored on the play to give Philadelphia a 2-1 lead.

The Marlins then took the lead for good with four runs in the fourth. Redmond made it 3-2 when his two-run double to right field scored Hee Seop Choi and Jeff Conine. Oliver helped his own cause with a one-out RBI single, and Luis Castillo capped the rally with a run-scoring single that scored Juan Pierre.

Pierre was 2-for-5 with two runs scored.

Philadelphia got a pair of runs back on Lieberthal's two-run double off Oliver in the bottom of the fourth, but Florida scored two against Myers in the sixth for a 7-4 lead. Castillo knocked in a run with a groundout to first, and Miguel Cabrera followed with an RBI single to score Pierre.

Thome then sent his fourth homer of the year well over the wall in right field to lead off the bottom of the sixth and get the Phillies within 7-5. Thome was 2-for-4 with three runs scored and a walk. He is batting .357, tops among Phillies starters.

Florida tacked on a couple of runs in the ninth on Lowell's two-run blast to left field. Cabrera scored on the play.

The Phillies then rallied for two in the ninth. Jimmy Rollins doubled off Nate Bump and scored on Tomas Perez's single. Armando Benitez came in after Marlon Byrd struck out, but he promptly yielded a single to Placido Polanco and an RBI single to Bobby Abreu.

Thome then stepped to the plate with an opportunity to end the game with one swing. He did exactly that, fanning on the third strike as Benitez earned his eighth save.
