Team Effort Leads Phillies to 7-3 Win in St.Louis

The Phillies put together a big win in St.Louis Tuesday night and came away with a 7-3 win. Pat Burrell finished the night 4-4 and contributed with a key defensive play to back Eric Milton. Mike Lieberthal and Bobby Abreu hit homeruns as the Phillies finished the night with 11 hits.

Pat Burrell had no problem at the plate. He also was pretty good in the field.

Burrell tied a career high with four hits, knocked in three runs and made a pair of big defensive plays as the Phillies posted a 7-3 win over the St. Louis Cardinals.

The Phillies had a 3-2 lead in the fifth, but the Cardinals had runners at the corners when Burrell made a leaping catch at the left field wall to take away an extra-base hit from former Phillie Scott Rolen. Edgar Renteria followed with a single, but Burrell fielded it cleanly and threw out Albert Pujols, who was trying to go from first to third.

"I figure the biggest thing about playing defense is positioning and being ready," Burrell said. "I was able to get back on that ball and be in a position to be able to try to jump up there and catch it."

"Since Spring Training he's put in a lot of work defensively," said Phillies manager Larry Bowa, whose team improved to 3-1 on a six-game road trip. "The play on Scott was huge. (Rolen) caught it out front. At first I didn't think it was going and it just kept going and Pat made a great play."

Burrell drew a leadoff walk in the sixth off starter Matt Morris (3-2) and Mike Lieberthal followed with his third homer of the season to snap a 3-3 tie.

"The home run to Lieberthal was just a fastball up, first pitch, he came out of his shoes and turned on a pitch," Morris said. "I'm thinking about the walk and trying to get ahead real quick and all of a sudden it's 5-3.

Burrell also had RBI doubles in the first and third and a run scoring single in the seventh.

"It's been a long time since I've gotten four hits in a game," said Burrell. "Today I was able to get some big hits for us."

Bobby Abreu added a solo homer and scored three runs for Philadelphia. He is 14-of-28 over his last six games, raising his batting average to .277 on the season.

Eric Milton (3-2) battled through five innings for the win. The veteran lefthander gave up three runs and seven hits, walking three and striking out two.

"My teammates picked me up tonight," Milton said. "It was a battle both ways back and forth, we were fortunate to come out on top.

Renteria hit a two-run homer for the Cardinals, who fell to 3-8 at home.

Morris surrendered five runs and seven hits in six innings. He walked four and struck out four.
