Madson Shuts Down Cards in Phillies 6-3 Win

Starter Brett Myers got an early hook and opened the door for Ryan Madson to become a hero. Madson held the Cardinals scoreless over four innings as the Phillies fought back to beat the Cardinals 6-3 Wednesday night. Billy Wagner came on to slam the door and record his sixth save of the season.

Ryan Madson is forcing his way into the Phillies immediate plans.

Madson dazzled in four innings of relief and pinch runner Marlon Byrd scored on a bang-bang play at the plate in the top of the ninth as the Phillies defeated the St. Louis Cardinals, 6-3.

Madson took over for an ineffective Brett Myers in the fifth and gave manager Larry Bowa exactly what he needed, a quality effort. The 23-year-old righthander allowed a single and did not walk a batter.

In 13 2/3 innings at the major league level, Madson (1-1) has yet to allow an earned run. A starter at Class AAA in 2003, Madson could be a rotation replacement for Myers, who has been awful in 2004.

Myers allowed three runs and eight hits in four-plus innings and - including spring training - has won just one of 10 starts. He has allowed 25 hits in 14 2/3 innings during the regular season.

The Phillies scored three times against Mike Lincoln (2-2) in the top of the ninth, Billy Wagner came on to record his sixth save in seven opportunities.

The game was deadlocked, 3-3, when David Bell opened the ninth with a double down the left field line. Jimmy Rollins got down a bunt and Bowa opted to run for Bell.

The speedy Byrd came on and the move proved crucial as pinch-hitter Ricky Ledee grounded sharply to second and former Phillie Marlon Anderson fired to the plate.

Byrd slid in just as St. Louis catcher Mike Matheny swung his glove across the plate. Plate umpire Larry Vanover signaled safe and St. Louis manager Tony La Russa came out to argue.

After a walk to Placido Polanco, Steve Kline came on to strike out Bobby Abreu. But Jim Thome delivered a two-run base hit to right for a 6-3 lead.

Thome had three hits and is a career .469 (30-for-64) hitter with 30 RBI in 17 games against the Cards.

St. Louis starter Jason Marquis allowed three runs - two earned - and five hits in six innings.

The loss dropped the Cardinals home record to 3-9, their worst start at Busch Stadium since 1990.
