Error Leads to 7-4 Loss for Phillies

Randy Wolf made the best of a bad situation and wound up pitching 6 2/3 innings after allowing four unearned runs as part of a five run Cardinals first inning. The Phillies comeback was helped along by homeruns from Jim Thome and Pat Burrell, but came up short in the Phillies 7-4 loss to the Cardinals.

Merely reaching .500 continues to be a hurdle the Philadelphia Phillies cannot overcome.

Hector Luna's three-run home run highlighted a five-run first inning as the St. Louis Cardinals posted a 7-4 victory over the Phillies, who failed in their sixth attempt to climb back to the break-even point.

The Cardinals wasted no time getting to Randy Wolf, who came into the start with a 21-inning scoreless streak as they took advantage of some poor defensive play by the Phils.

With one out, Phils second baseman Placido Polanco booted So Taguchi's grounder for an error before Albert Pujols singled to put runners on first and second.

Former Phillie Scott Rolen then hit a potential inning ending double-play grounder up the middle, but Polanco and shortstop Tomas Perez collided, allowing the ball to squirt into center for an RBI single.

Edgar Renteria followed with a bloop RBI single to right to make it 2-0, before Luna drove an 0-1 offering from Wolf deep to left for his second homerun of the season and a 5-0 St.Louis advantage. Four of the runs were unearned.

"It was a tough inning," Wolf said. "It was a little weird. I had a chance to get out of it, but I hung a slider that didn't move very much and (Luna) hit it out."

The Phillies answered with three runs off Jeff Suppan (3-3) in the bottom of the first, closing to 5-3 on Bobby Abreu's RBI groundout and back-to-back homers by Jim Thome and Pat Burrell.

Wolf (2-2) settled down, only allowing a sacrifice fly to Albert Pujols in the fifth before leaving with two outs in the seventh.

"Randy Wolf did a great job today," Phillies manager Larry Bowa. "We didn't execute in the first inning."

But Suppan also settled into a groove, surrendering four runs and six hits in six innings with two walks and four strikeouts.

Five St.Louis relievers combined for three scoreless innings, with Jason Isringhausen recording the final four outs for his fourth save.

The frustration showed for the Phillies as pinch hitter Jason Michaels was ejected by plate umpire Dana Demuth after taking a called third strike for the final out in the eighth with two runners aboard.

After the Cards added a run in the ninth on a RBI fielder's choice by Jim Edmonds, Bowa was also tossed by Demuth during a pitching change for continuing to argue about the Michaels strikeout.

The Phillies have alternated wins and losses in their last eight contests and have not been at .500 since they were 1-1.

"I think we're frustrated because we lost the series," Wolf said "We'll be OK. I guarantee you. We'll get over .500."
