Padilla is Bigger Than Johnson in Phils 4-1 Win

Vicente Padilla has had somewhat of a tough luck season. Friday night, it all came together as he out-pitched Arizona's Randy Johnson to help the Phillies to a 4-1 lead. Jim Thome, who was given the day off the last time the Phillies faced Johnson, hit homerun number ten on the season to help the Phillies offense.

Jim Thome and Randy Johnson may end up in the Hall of Fame. In one of their few head-to-head matchups, Thome got the better of the hard-throwing lefthander.

Thome's homerun off Johnson with one out in the seventh inning ignited a three-run rally as the Phillies posted a 4-1 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Johnson (3-3) was brilliant for 6 1/3 innings, allowing three hits. He fanned Pat Burrell to open the seventh for his 10th strikeout, but Thome lofted a 1-0 pitch just over left field wall to tie it, 1-1.

It was Thome's fourth career at bat against Johnson, who followed the homer by walking Mike Lieberthal.

Arizona manager Bob Brenly turned to Mike Koplove, who promptly allowed a double to David Bell and an RBI single to Jimmy Rollins, who was mired in an 0-for-13 funk. Pinch hitter Ricky Ledee followed with a bouncer to second base that plated Bell.

Johnson felt Brenly should have asked him if he was spent. "I was pitching on an extra day's rest. I felt like I was in complete control of the game. The game is 1-1 and I walk a batter," Johnson said. "It is his call, I will go with it. I felt good. There a lot of things that I don't agree with over the course of my career, you just go with it. I am not the manager."

The rally made a winner of former Diamondback Vicente Padilla (1-4), who had by far his best outing of the season. He allowed a run and five hits in six innings, walked one and struck out five.

The only mistake Padilla made was Steve Finley's eighth homer in nine games, a leadoff shot in the fourth.

Rheal Cormier allowed a hit in 1 2/3 innings and Tim Worrell got the final out in the eighth. Closer Billy Wagner retired the side in order in the ninth for his eighth save.
