Phillies Edge D'backs on Perez Homerun

After beating Randy Johnson, the Phillies came back to beat Brandon Webb, taking the first two games of their series with the Diamondbacks. Tomas Perez smashed a key three-run homerun as the Phillies held on for an 8-7 win, finally evening their season record.

The Phillies finally reached .500, a mark they hope not to see again.

Tomas Perez hit a three-run homerun in the top of the fourth inning and drove in a career-high four runs as the Phillies held on for an 8-7 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Expected to be the favorite for the National League East Division title following an active offseason, the Phillies (14-14) have struggled and had only reached .500 on April 7, the second game of the season.

After failing in five previous attempts at the break-even mark, Philadelphia got there thanks to Perez. Filling in for injured second baseman Placido Polanco, Perez gave the Phillies a 6-3 lead when he homered off starter Brandon Webb with two outs in the fourth.

The Phillies took a 7-3 lead when Bobby Abreu lifted a sacrifice fly in the fifth. After Shea Hillenbrand doubled and scored on Danny Bautista's RBI single in the bottom half, Perez lifted a sacrifice fly in the sixth.

Perez's fourth RBI turned out to be the winning run as the bullpen struggled to hold the lead. After starter Eric Milton (3-0) allowed five runs and seven hits in five innings, rookie Ryan Madson pitched 2 1/3 innings and was charged with the first earned run of his career.

Tim Worrell spelled Madson and gave up Matt Kata's sacrifice fly in the eighth. With closer Billy Wagner unavailable due to back spasms, Worrell also worked the ninth and gave up two hits and Steve Finley's RBI fielder's choice but notched his first save for Philadelphia.

Webb (2-2) was tagged for seven runs - five earned - and six hits in five innings.

Webb allowed two runs in the opening frame before the Diamondbacks grabbed a 3-2 lead on Luis Gonzalez's two-run homer in the third.

But the Phillies responded with a four-run fourth. After Abreu and Pat Burrell walked, David Bell tied it with a single up the middle.
