Phillies Pound Rockies to Take Division Lead

It's taken a while for the real Phillies to stand up, but they're officially here. With a 16-5 pounding of the Colorado Rockies Saturday, the Phillies took advantage of a Marlins loss to move into first place in the National League East. Marlon Byrd, Bobby Abreu and Jimmy Rollins led the Phillies offense that pounded out a season-high 18 hits and 16 runs.

Marlon Byrd and Jimmy Rollins set the table and the Philadelphia Phillies got fat at the expense of the Colorado Rockies.

Byrd, Rollins and Bobby Abreu spearheaded an 18-hit attack as the Phillies routed the Rockies, 16-5, for their seventh win in eight games.

The Phillies collected a season-high 18 hits, eclipsing their previous high of 17, set on April 24. The 16 runs were six more than the Phillies had scored in any game this season and their most since beating Atlanta 18-5 last September.

Byrd had three hits, scored three times and drove in two runs.

Rollins continued his hot streak with four hits and scored four times. He had three hits on Friday and has raised his average from .209 to .246 over that span.

Abreu went 3-for-3 and tied a season high with five RBI as the Phillies improved to 7-1 on their current 10-game road trip. Abreu also drove in five runs on April 23 against Montreal.

Phillies starter Brett Myers (2-2) lasted six innings to get the win. He allowed four earned runs and five hits, walked three and struck out two. Myers gave up two homers but was able to preserve an early lead.

Rockies starter Scott Elarton (0-6) had another bad outing, allowing seven earned runs and nine hits in four innings. He struck out five but walked three and saw his ERA rise from 9.16 to 9.80.

Jim Thome started the scoring for the Phillies in the first inning with a two-run single. The Phillies added two runs in the third and three in the fourth to chase Elarton and build a 7-1 lead.

Colorado's Luis Gonzalez drove in a run on a groundout in the fifth and Royce Clayton followed with a solo homer to draw the Rockies within 7-3.

The Phillies tacked on three runs in the sixth. Abreu added a sacrifice fly in the seventh and belted a three-run homer in the eighth to cap the Phillies scoring.

Chase Utley went 0-for-6 and was the only Phillies starter that did not get a hit.

Todd Helton went 2-for-4 and drove in two runs but it was not enough to prevent the Rockies from dropping their third straight game. Colorado has allowed at least five runs in seven of their last eight games.

The series continues Sunday when Kevin Millwood (4-2, 3.55) goes against Jason Young, who was just recalled from AAA Colorado Springs.
