Phillies Fall Short in 7-6 Loss to Rockies

A disputed play at second base in the bottom of the eighth inning gave the Colorado Rockies what would be the winning run. Larry Bowa argued the play, but the damage was done and the Rockies beat the Phillies 7-6. The Phillies used two three-run homeruns, but Kevin Millwood gave up six runs in five innings before the Rockies went on to win the game in the eighth.

Jeromy Burnitz made all four of his hits count, although the Phillies would dispute the last one.

Burnitz's questionable infield single with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning proved to be the difference as the Rockies edged the Phillies, 7-6, for their second win in seven games.

After Philadelphia took a 3-0 lead on Ricky Ledee's first-inning home run, Burnitz got the Rockies on the board with an RBI single in the bottom half. He added an RBI double in the third to draw Colorado within a run before plating Luis Gonzalez in the fourth with a base hit, giving the Rockies a 6-3 cushion.

Chase Utley tied it in the sixth with a three-run blast, but Colorado got to lefthanded reliever Rheal Cormier (2-3) two innings later.

Cormier relieved Ryan Madson and yielded an infield single to Kit Pellow before uncorking a wild pitch. Gonzalez got down a sacrifice and Cormier walked Todd Helton and Vinny Castilla to load the bases for Burnitz.

Tying his career high for hits in a game, Burnitz hit a grounder to second. Utley dived to field it and made a throw to second that appeared to beat Castilla for the third out. Second base umpire John Hirschbeck called Castilla safe, allowing Pellow to score and give the Rockies a 7-6 lead. Phillies manager Larry Bowa argued unsuccessfully, and Shawn Chacon worked around a hit in the ninth to notch his 10th save.

Tim Harikkala (1-0) retired two of the three batters he faced in the top of the eighth to pick up his first major league win since 1999.

The series wraps up Monday with Randy Wolf (2-3, 3.20) going against Shawn Estes (5-2, 6.70). The Phillies will then return home to start a three-game series with the Los Angeles Dodgers at Citizens Bank Park.
