Trachsel Shuts Down Phillies 5-0

You know it's a bad night for the Phillies offense at Shea Stadium when Pat Burrell strikes out three times. Burrell, who loves to hit at Shea, managed only a walk in four trips to the plate as Steve Trachsel shut down the Phillies offense in the Mets 5-0 win in the first meeting of the two teams this season.

Steve Trachsel and Mike Piazza enabled the New York Mets to pass the opener of a two-week litmus test.

Trachsel pitched 6 2/3 strong innings and Piazza homered and drove in a pair of runs as the Mets beat the Phillies, 5-0, and tied a season high with their fourth straight win.

Cliff Floyd added a two-run double for the Mets (23-22), who also won four in a row from May 2-6 and moved over .500 for the first time since they were 4-3 on April 12.

Over the next two weeks, the Mets will be playing only the Phillies and Florida Marlins, who began the day in a virtual tie for first place in the National League East Division. This stretch of games might give an indication whether the Mets, who have finished in last place each of the last two seasons, can at least have a chance of being in postseason contention.

Trachsel (5-3) began the stretch of noteworthy games in fine fashion, allowing four hits and walking four while striking out six.

The Phillies lost for just the second time in seven games and were held under three runs for the first time in 26 contests.

The Phillies loaded the bases in the seventh on a single by David Bell, a walk to Chase Utley and an error by third baseman Ty Wigginton, who fielded a grounder by Marlon Byrd but dropped it as he tried to throw to first. Mike Stanton relieved Trachsel and struck out Jimmy Rollins to end the threat.

The outing followed a one-hitter by Tom Glavine on Sunday, giving the Mets back-to-back shutouts for the first time since May 14-15, 2002 against Los Angeles.

Eric Milton (5-1) had won six straight decisions dating to last season but suffered his first loss since September 13, 2002. He allowed three runs and six hits in six innings while striking out seven.

One of the hits allowed by Milton was a homer by Piazza in the sixth, his 10th of the season.

Jim Thome had a double in three at-bats in his return to the lineup. He missed the previous five games due to injuries to both hands.

The Mets scored twice in the third with two outs. Danny Garcia walked and went to second on a single to left by Floyd before Piazza delivered an RBI single to left to extend his hitting streak to 11 games. Shane Spencer made it 2-0 with a single to center.

Floyd added a two-run double in the seventh off reliever Rheal Cormier.

Trachsel also worked his way out of trouble in the fifth. The first two Phillies reached base before Milton failed to sacrifice, Byrd popped out to shortstop and Rollins grounded back to the Mets' starter.

Elizardo Ramirez made his major league debut for the Phillies in the eighth inning, pitching a perfect inning and striking out one hitter.

The series ends Tuesday night with Brett Myers (3-2, 4.25) going against Matt Ginter (1-0, 5.06).
