Mets' Miscues Help Phillies to New York Split

Usually, Mike Piazza is the one that is burying the Phillies. Wednesday night, a bad throw from Piazza opened the door to a big comeback inning for the Phillies. The Mets made three errors, two of them coming in one inning, and the Phillies bullpen shut down the Mets offense as the Phillies beat New York 7-4 to split their two game series in New York.

Mets pitchers came into the game coming off a shutout of the Phillies and a total of 22 shutout innings. They stretched that streak to 28 before the Phillies finally brought the streak to a screeching stop.

An error by shortstop Kaz Matsui started the seventh inning. The error quickly came back to bite the Mets when the next hitter, Mike Lieberthal, doubled to score David Bell, who reached on the error. Lieberthal wound up at third on a sacrifice fly and then, pinch-hitter Jason Michaels walked. That ended the outing of former Phillie Ricky Bottalico who came on in relief to start the seventh inning.

John Franco didn't have much luck as Doug Glanville stepped to the plate and dropped a single to center to score Lieberthal. Chase Utley then followed with a sharp groundball to first that Mike Piazza played cleanly, but threw away trying to start a double play. Piazza's throw allowed Michaels to score. Mike Stanton came on to relieve Franco and walked Bobby Abreu to load the bases. Jim Thome followed with a double to score two runs and give the Phillies a 5-3 lead. The Phillies would get one more run in the inning on a sacrifice fly by Bell.

The Phillies loaded the bases with nobody out in the top of the ninth, but got just one run out of the threat on a sacrifice fly by Lieberthal that scored the Phillies seventh run of the night.

The Mets scored their first three runs off starter Brett Myers. Piazza doubled to drive in a run in the third that gave the Mets a 1-0 lead.

Myers made it through the first five innings allowing just the one run, but the Mets got to him in the sixth inning. Jason Phillips led off the inning with a single and he went to third on a double by Ty Wigginton. Myers then struck out pinch-hitter Eric Valent before issuing an intentional walk to Matsui and exiting in favor of Roberto Hernandez.

Hernandez, who has struggled with his control at times this season, entered with bases loaded and two outs. Hernandez walked Cliff Floyd to force home a run and bring Piazza to the plate. Hernandez struck out Piazza to end the threat with the Mets leading 3-0.

The Mets got another run thanks to a bases loaded walk in the eighth. Piazza again came to the plate with bases loaded and the Phillies leading 6-3. Rheal Cormier, who came on in relief of Ryan Madson pitched around Piazza and walked him to force home a run. The run was unearned because of an error on Utley that loaded the bases.

Mets starter Matt Ginter threw six shutout innings before being lifted for a pinch-hitter in the top of the seventh.

Roberto Hernandez (1-1) was credited with the win and Tim Worrell put down the Mets in the ninth for his sixth save of the year. John Franco (0-3) took the loss for the Mets.

The Phillies return home for a four-game series with the Atlanta Braves starting Thursday night. Kevin Millwood (4-2, 4.29), who is winless against his former team, goes against Jaret Wright (2-5, 4.25) in the series opener.
