Former Phillies Slam Current Phillies, 8-4

For Phillies fans who hated the Phils December 1982 "five-for-one" deal that sent Julio Franco and others to Cleveland for Von Hayes, Thursday night brought back bad memories. Twenty-two years after that deal, Franco became the oldest player ever to hit a grand slam as the Braves beat the Phils 8-4. Plus, Johnny Estrada, traded by the Phillies in 2002, also had a big night as former Phillies came back to haunt the current squad of Phillies heroes.

Forty-Five year old Julio Franco's seventh career grand slam and first since 1996 highlighted a five-run first inning as the Braves beat the Phillies 8-4 Thursday night in Atlanta.

At 43, Carlton Fisk was the previous oldest player to hit a grand slam. Fisk's mark came in 1991 while with the Chicago White Sox. In May, Franco broke his own record when he became the oldest player to hit a pinch-hit homerun. He accomplished that feat with a two-run blast against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Franco, who has been battling a sore back, was in the starting lineup for the first time since May 23.

Johnny Estrada added a two-run homerun among his three hits for the Braves, who built a 6-0 lead after two innings en route to winning for the eighth time in 12 games.

Staked to the early lead, John Thomson (5-2) cruised to his third straight win. The righthander gave up one run and six hits in seven innings, walking three and striking out three and improved to 2-0 with a 1.29 ERA against the Phillies this season.

Chase Utley hit a two-run homer and Thome a solo shot for the Phillies, who have lost four straight and seven of their last 10 games.

Recalled from the minor leagues before the game, Josh Hancock (0-1) was ripped for six runs and eight hits in two innings.

The Phillies were lucky in that Elizardo Ramirez and Geoff Geary were able to contribute six innings of work out of the bullpen, saving the bulk of the pen from increasing their workload.

The Phillies and Braves play again Friday night with Eric Milton (6-1, 4.08) going against Travis Smith (0-1, 3.00).
