White Sox Beat Phils 14-11 in Homerun Derby

Ryan Madson's first major league start didn't go the way he envisioned. The rookie right-hander was hammered early and didn't even make it out of the first inning Tuesday night. The Phillies and White Sox played a wild one that included a total of nine homeruns. The Phillies came out on the short end of a 14-11 score.

While Frank Thomas had a night to remember, Ryan Madson had one he'd like to forget.

Thomas homered, doubled twice and drove in four runs and Juan Uribe and Paul Konerko each belted a pair of homers as the Chicago White Sox scored in each of the first five innings en route to a 14-11 triumph over the Phils.

Making his first major league start, Madson retired just two of the nine batters he faced before being replaced. The lanky righthander, who yielded six runs and six hits, served up three home runs after allowing just one in his first 35 2/3 innings.

After the Phillies tied the game 6-6 in the top of the second, Uribe and Thomas opened the bottom of the inning with back-to-back homers off Amaury Telemaco (0-2). Uribe's shot gave him his second two-homer game of the season and fourth of his career.

Thomas' blast was the 431st of his career, tying him with Cal Ripken Jr. for 31st on the all-time list.

Thomas gave Chicago a 10-6 lead with a two-run double in the third. It was his 441st career double, moving him past Luke Appling for the most in franchise history.

The slugger drove in a run in the fifth with his second two-base hit of the game. The RBI was his 1,427th, tying him with Charlie Gehringer for 53rd all-time.

Konerko hit solo shots in the first and fourth innings for his second two-homer effort of the year and eighth of his career.

Carlos Lee extended his hitting streak to 23 games with a solo homer, his first during the career-high run.

Mark Buehrle (6-1) settled down after a rough start for his fifth straight win. The lefthander allowed six runs and nine hits in seven innings but yielded just one single after the second.

Mike Jackson, a former Phillie, had trouble holding a 13-6 lead, surrendering five runs in one-plus inning before Cliff Politte - another former Phillie - got the last three outs for his first save of the season.

Jim Thome provided most of Philadelphia's offense with a pair of three-run homers. The first baseman passed Joe Carter for 39th on the all-time list with 397 and climbed within one of Carlos Delgado's leading total of 37 in interleague play.

Jason Michaels also homered as the team combined for nine blasts, three shy of the major league and U.S. Cellular Field record.
