Ledee's Twin Blasts Blast Twins, 11-6

Ricky Ledee hit two homeruns and Placido Polanco chipped in with a three-run shot as the Phillies beat Minnesota 11-6 to take the first game of a three-game series at the Metrodome. The Phillies built an early lead, only to see the Twins tie the game before the Phillies offense took care of things with a five-run ninth inning.

Ricky Ledee is making a strong case for more playing time.

Ledee homered twice and drove in five runs and Placido Polanco added three hits and three RBI as the Phillies continued to feast on American League pitching with an 11-6 triumph over the Minnesota Twins.

One of the top pinch hitters in the game, Ledee got a rare start thanks to the designated hitter rule in American League ballparks. He made the most of his chance, belting a two-run homer in the fourth inning before capping the scoring with a three-run blast off J.C. Romero during the Phillies five-run ninth-inning rally.

It was the second career two-homer game for Ledee, who also singled and scored in the sixth inning. In seven starts this season, Ledee has posted five multi-hit games with a .406 average and 13 RBI.

Ledee's second blast gave him a career high-tying five RBI and helped Philadelphia to their third straight double-digit run output, all during interleague play. The Phillies plated 11 and 13 runs at U.S. Cellular Field in Chicago, splitting the rain-shortened two-game series with the White Sox.

Polanco gave the Phillies a 5-1 lead in the fifth with his second homer of the season and Jim Thome snapped a 5-5 tie in the ninth with a two-run grounds-rule double that center fielder Torii Hunter could not track down.

Tim Worrell (2-2) benefited from the late-inning outburst, getting the win after tossing a scoreless eighth.

Former Phillie Terry Mulholland (0-2) was tagged with the loss after allowing two runs and three hits in 2 2/3 innings.

Rookie Joe Mauer, who posted his first career three-hit game, gave Minnesota a 1-0 lead with a sacrifice fly in the second inning. But after Hunter robbed Bobby Abreu of an extra-base hit with a leaping catch against the wall to start the fourth, the Phillies moved ahead.

Thome drew a one-out walk and, after Pat Burrell popped out, Ledee crushed a 3-1 pitch by Twins starter Seth Greisinger over the right field wall for his fourth homer.

After Polanco's blast gave the Phillies a four-run lead, Mauer began Minnesota's comeback with a leadoff homer in the bottom of the fifth. The teams traded runs in the sixth before the Twins chased Philadelphia starter Brett Myers with three in the seventh.

Mauer opened the inning with a double, took third on a wild pitch and scored on Cristian Guzman's groundout. Doug Mientkiewicz stroked a two-out double and Lew Ford followed with his eighth homer, tying the game at 6-6.
