Silva Haunts Phillies as Twins Win 6-1

How many times have you heard of something like this happening? Carlos Silva, in his first game against the Phillies since he was traded, shut down the Phillies, allowing just one run over seven innings of work. To add insult to injury, Silva set a career high in strikeouts with eight as the Twins beat the Phillies 6-1.

Carlos Silva proved to his former team that he is good enough to be a quality starter.

Silva allowed one run and struck out a career-high eight in seven innings to lead the Minnesota Twins to a 6-1 victory over the Phillies.

Acquired by the Twins last December in the deal that sent lefthander Eric Milton to Philadelphia, Silva (7-3) tied Juan Rincon for the team lead in wins. This one has to be the sweetest since he made just one start in two seasons with the Phillies.

Philadelphia rapped out eight hits against Silva but did not score until Jim Thome led off the seventh inning with his 399th career home run. It moved him past Al Kaline into 37th place on the all-time list.

The Twins jumped on Phillies starter Kevin Millwood (4-5) for four runs after two were out in the second inning. Jacque Jones singled and Jose Offerman walked before Joe Mauer delivered an RBI single. Luis Rivas followed with a two-run triple to right-center and scored on a single by Cristian Guzman.

Bowa was ejected by third base umpire Terry Craft after disputing a safe call by Craft on a stolen base by Guzman in the seventh inning.

The Twins added two runs in the eighth off rookie reliever Geoff Geary. Rivas singled for his third hit of the game, moved up on an infield hit by Guzman and scored on a single by Doug Mientkiewicz. Lew Ford doubled in Guzman.
