Hey Abbott! Newcomer Leads Phils to 2-1 Win

Paul Abbott did a decent job of impressing his new bosses on his first day on the job. Abbott gave the Phillies five shutout innings and the bullpen - with the possible exception of Roberto Hernandez - took over from there as the Phillies beat Minnesota 2-1 and finished their road trip to Atlanta, Chicago and Minnesota with a 5-4 record.

The last time that Paul Abbott pitched in the Metrodome, the Twins picked him apart. Two days later, Abbott was released by Tampa Bay. On his return, the Phillies were duly impressed.

Abbott gave the Phillies five shutout innings, allowing just three hits and three walks. He also struck out three hitters. The Phillies got about the number of innings out of Abbott that they hoped for since he hadn't pitched in almost two weeks.

Roberto Hernandez came on for Abbott in the sixth inning and promptly gave up a solo homerun to Corey Koskie that gave the Twins a 1-0 lead.

Twins' starter Brad Radke was cruising along. The only blemish on his day came in the seventh inning. Pat Burrell led off the inning with a double to right field and after Radke got Chase Utley to pop-up for the first out of the inning, Tomas Perez singled to put runners on first and third. Todd Pratt hit a sharp grounder to third and Koskie made a good play on the ball and threw home to get Burrell at the plate. The Phillies had runners on first and second with two outs. Ricky Ledee pinch-hit for Doug Glanville and singled to center to score Perez and tie the game 1-1.

Rheal Cormier kept Minnesota off the board in the seventh. In the bottom of the inning, the Phillies got to reliever Aaron Fultz (2-2). Placido Polanco led off with a double and Fultz walked Bobby Abreu. Jim Thome hit a long fly ball to center field that Torii Hunter made a nice catch on for the first out, but Polanco moved to third. Juan Rincon, who had shut down the Phillies in Saturday night's game, came on to face Burrell and issued a walk to load the bases. Utley then grounded a ball to second base that should have been a double play, but Cristian Guzman's relay throw was off target and pulled first baseman Doug Mientkiewicz off the base, allowing Polanco to score.

With the Phillies up 2-1, Tim Worrell gave up a hit and a walk in the eighth, but worked out of the jam to keep the Phillies up by one. Billy Wagner gave up a leadoff single to Luis Rivas, who was 4-4 on the day, but then put down the Twins to record his ninth save of the year.

The Phillies return home for a makeup game with Cincinnati on Monday. Jose Acevedo (3-5, 5.09) takes on Eric Milton (8-1, 4.28). The game will feature the potential of two homerun milestones. Cincinnati's Ken Griffey, Jr has 499 career homeruns and the Phillies Jim Thome is at 399.
