Tigers Maul Phillies 10-3

Jeremy Bonderman didn't exactly bring a stellar record into Citizens Bank Park, but the 21 year old showed just how good he can be. Bonderman held the Phillies to one hit over seven innings as Detroit pounded the Phillies 10-3. Meanwhile, Phillies starter Brian Powell struggled through six innings.

Jeremy Bonderman pitched seven outstanding innings and combined with three relievers on a two-hitter as the Tigers posted a 10-3 rout over the Phillies.

Detroit improved to 5-2 against the National League after posting just four victories against the senior circuit last season. Bonderman (5-5) was 0-3 in interleague play a year ago.

The righthander ended a personal three-game skid by allowing one run and one hit while striking out eight batters. The only hit he allowed was Bobby Abreu's solo homer in the fourth inning.

After Abreu's homer got the Phillies on the board, Bonderman retired eleven of the next twelve batters, including the last ten he faced. Pat Burrell was the lone Phillie to reach base with a fourth-inning walk against Bonderman, whose last start was limited to two innings because of rain.

The Tigers struck first on Ivan Rodriguez's sacrifice fly in the first inning. Omar Infante drilled his fourth homer in the second inning - a three-run shot off Phillies starter Brian Powell (0-1) for a 4-0 advantage.

Powell was activated from the disabled list earlier in the day in time to make his first start. After allowing the four runs in the first two innings, he settled down and retired twelve straight batters before allowing Rondell White's ninth homer of the season in the sixth inning.

"I was fighting myself to get the ball down," said Powell, who recorded a career-high eight strikeouts. "After that, I felt pretty good."

Carlos Guillen added a three-run triple - his second three-base hit of the game - in the seventh inning and came around to score when Phillies catcher Todd Pratt was caught unaware as Guillen broke for home and made it for a 9-1 cushion.

Jim Thome, who hit his 400th homer on Monday, became the first player in the major leagues to reach the twenty homerun mark with a solo homerun in the ninth off Ugueth Urbina.

The series continues Wednesday night when Brett Myers (4-3, 4.45) goes against Mike Maroth (5-3, 4.21).
