Myers and Michaels are Matinee Stars for Phils

For the first time in their history, the Phillies played a home day-night double header. The afternoon game gave Brett Myers and Jason Michaels a chance to become matinee idols as they led the Phils to a 6-2 win over Detroit. Myers threw seven strong innings, while Michaels matched a career high for RBI in a game.

Jason Michaels smashed a two-run homerun and matched a career high with four RBI as the Phillies beat the Detroit Tigers, 6-2, in the first game of a day-night doubleheader.

"He (Michaels) respects the game and plays hard. He gives you everything he has every time he goes out there."

Michaels finished the day with three hits in three at bats and made two spectacular defensive plays. Michaels robbed Omar Infante of a base hit in the third inning and threw out Alex Sanchez at the plate in the sixth.

After driving in the Phillies' first run with a single in the fourth, Michaels snapped a 1-1 tie in the sixth with his third homerun of the season.

The Tigers Eric Munson hit a solo homerun off starter Brett Myers to make it a 3-2 game, but the Tigers comeback was short-lived when the Phillies scored three runs in the bottom half of the inning.

Detroit pitchers walked eight batters, including four in the seventh inning. Al Levine issued a bases-loaded pass to Pat Burrell to force in the first run of the seventh and David Bell followed with a sacrifice fly. "We shoot ourselves in the foot. Sometimes we're good and sometimes we are not. That is why our record is what it is."

Myers (5-3) held the Tigers to one earned run and four hits in seven innings with a walk while striking out five. "Myers had a good curveball and good control. I was very impressed," remarked Trammell.

Mike Maroth (5-4) took the loss, allowing three runs and six hits in six innings.
