Billy the Kid Skids as Phillies Split With Tigers

You can't be perfect all the time. Billy Wagner couldn't lock down a Phillies win in the nightcap of their double header with Detroit. Wagner's miscue led to a 5-4 Phillies loss and a split of their day-night double header. Brandon Inge's solo homerun in the ninth tied the game and Carlos Guillen's RBI single in the eleventh was the one that sank the Phillies.

Carlos Guillen put an end to something Billy Wagner could not.

Guillen's RBI single with two outs in the top of the 11th inning lifted the Tigers to a 5-4 win over the Phillies in the second game of a day-night doubleheader.

The Tigers jumped out to a 3-0 lead against starter Kevin Millwood, but the Phillies climbed within a run before rain delayed the game after the fifth inning for 51 minutes.

Philadelphia took advantage of the rest, rallying for a pair of runs in the seventh to move ahead, 4-3. With one out in the ninth, Brandon Inge belted a solo homer off Wagner to send the game to extra innings.

"It was a bad pitch, down and over the middle," said Wagner, who blew his second save opportunity of the season.

In a series that saw Tuesday's opener delayed by rain and Wednesday's game rained out, both teams loaded the bases in the tenth but failed to push across the go-ahead run.

Phillies rookie Ryan Madson (4-2) appeared on his way to a quick eleventh, retiring the first two batters, but Guillen hit the last of three consecutive singles, grounding a 2-2 pitch to right field to put Detroit ahead.

The RBI was Guillen's 45th of the season, second to Baltimore's Miguel Tejada among major league shortstops.

Ugueth Urbina (2-2) got the win after tossing two scoreless innings and Danny Patterson pitched a perfect eleventh for his second save.

Jason Smith and Bobby Higginson hit back-to-back RBI doubles and, two batters later, Carlos Pena plated a run with a single to give the Tigers a 3-0 advantage in the third inning.

Jimmy Rollins' RBI base hit in the bottom of the third and Ricky Ledee's solo homer in the fourth drew Philadelphia within 3-2.

With one out in the seventh, Marlon Byrd reached on an infield single and advanced to second on a throwing error by Guillen. Todd Pratt followed with a run-scoring single, tying the game.

Esteban Yan struck out pinch hitter Pat Burrell, but Rollins ripped an RBI double to put the Phillies up 4-3.

Two outs from their fourth win in five games, the Phillies were stunned when Inge deposited a 1-1 offering over the left field wall for his seventh homer, setting the stage for Detroit's comeback.

The Phillies start a weekend series with Kansas City, marking the first visit of the Royals to Philadelphia since the 1980 World Series. Paul Abbott (0-0, 0.00) will make his second start as a Phillie and will be opposed by Chris George (0-0, 3.50) for KC.
