Millwood Looks Better in Phillies Win

The Phillies are hoping that Kevin Millwood's recent slump comes to an early end and he seems to have taken a step in that direction. For the third time this season, Millwood beat the Montreal Expos with an impressive 6 2/3 innings. The Phillies used the long ball to put together a 5-2 win and keep pace with the Florida Marlins.

Kevin Millwood has been struggling of late, but showed signs of breaking out of the slumber in the Phillies 5-2 win over Montreal. Millwood threw 6 2/3 strong innings and allowed five hits and three walks while striking out seven. The win was Millwood's first win since May 11.

The Expos got to Millwood in the bottom of the first inning when Endy Chavez led off the inning with a bunt single. Millwood walked Jose Vidro to put runners on first and second and Orlando Cabrera singled to drive home Chavez with the game's first run.

After the Phillies had taken a 5-1 lead, Vidro hit a solo homerun in the sixth to pull the Expos within three runs.

Expos' starter Sun-Woo Kim (3-3, 4.31) gave up a game tying homerun to Jim Thome in the top of the second inning. The homerun was Thome's 24th of the season.

The Phillies also added single runs in the third and fourth innings.

Jimmy Rollins and Bobby Abreu teamed up to give the Phillies a 2-1 lead in the third. Rollins slashed a one out triple and one out later, Abreu doubled to drive home Rollins. Mike Lieberthal's eighth homerun of the season expanded the Phillies lead to 3-1 in the fourth inning.

The Phillies put up two more runs off Kim in the sixth. David Bell led off the inning with a solo homerun, his seventh of the season. Jason Michaels walked and was sacrificed to second by Millwood. Rollins then singled to right to score Michaels and knock Kim out of the game. T.J. Tucker entered and stopped the Phillies rally.

When Millwood tired in the seventh, Rheal Cormier came on and got the final two outs in the seventh inning. Tim Worrell put down the Expos in the eighth and Billy Wagner pitched a perfect ninth inning for his eleventh save of the season. Wagner struck out two hitters in his one inning of work.

The series wraps up Thursday afternoon with Eric Milton (9-1, 4.31) going against Tony Armas, Jr (0-2, 8.31). Armas spent most of the early part of the season on the DL.
