Clutch Hitting, Bullpen Fail Phils in 6-3 Loss

Expos manager Frank Robinson needed innings from his starter, Zach Day, and he got them. Day pitched 6 2/3 innings, throwing 124 pitches and left with his team trailing by one run. With the game turned over to the bullpens, the Expos wound up coming out ahead as Tim Worrell struggled and the Phillies lost to Montreal 6-3.

Tim Worrell has been strong for the Phillies all season, but experienced a meltdown Wednesday night against Montreal. "We had the game where we wanted it, Worrell in the eighth and Wagner in the ninth," explained manager Larry Bowa after the game.

Worrell (2-3) gave up four earned runs in 2/3 of an inning as Montreal went from trailing by a run to leading by three runs after 7 1/2 innings. Worrell gave up four hits and two walks in the eighth.

Meanwhile, Zach Day kept the Expos in the game, giving up eight hits and a career high seven walks over 6 2/3 innings. Still, he left the game with his team trailing just 3-2. Joe Horgan (1-0) came on in relief of Day in the seventh and threw one pitch to get out of the inning.

Phillies starter Paul Abbott was lifted for a pinch-hitter in the bottom of the fifth inning as the Phillies looked to take advantage of a key spot. Jim Thome had launched a two-run homerun earlier in the inning to give the Phillies a 3-2 lead. Bowa went to Chase Utley to hit for Abbott, but the strategy failed and the Phillies left the inning with just a one-run lead.

In his four starts with the Phillies, Abbott has received a total of ten runs worth of support.

Abbott gave up a solo homerun to Brad Wilkerson in the top of the fifth as Montreal took a 2-1 lead. Their earlier run was also on a solo shot from Tony Batista. Batista's shot just cleared the left field fence and tied the game 1-1.

After seeing the Phillies score 31 runs over the first two games of the series, Montreal had to think they were headed down the same road when the Phillies put up a first inning run. Jimmy Rollins singled, went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Placido Polanco and landed on third after a single by Bobby Abreu. Day uncorked a wild pitch, allowing Rollins to score the game's first run.

The Phillies set a franchise record for homeruns in a month, finishing June with 44 team homeruns, but wound up with a 13-14 record. Jim Thome tied the franchise record for homeruns in a month by a player when he hit his fifteenth of the month in the fifth inning. Thome tied Cy Williams of the 1923 Phillies for that record.

Jose Vidro finished the night 3-5, giving him a 17 game hitting streak. Chad Cordero pitched a perfect ninth inning for his fifth save of the season for Montreal.

The series wraps up Thursday night when Randy Wolf (2-3, 2.87) goes against Scott Downs (0-1, 10.12).
