Double-Digit Runs Return in Phillies Latest Win

Randy Wolf wasn't exactly his old self, but the Phillies offense gave him enough of a cushion that it didn't matter. Wolf pitched seven innings to get his first win since coming off the disabled list. Meanwhile, the Phillies offense, after taking most of last night off, came back to put up ten runs as the Phillies beat Montreal 10-5 to take three out of the four games in their series.

"Everybody Hits - Woo Hoo!"

Everybody in the Phillies lineup had at least one hit, including starting pitcher Randy Wolf, who laced an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth to put the Phillies up 10-4.

Wolf finished the night pitching seven innings, giving up four earned runs. "He got tougher as the game went on," said Larry Bowa. "It's a big lift to see him back out there."

Mike Lieberthal went 3-5, hit his ninth homerun of the season and drove in four runs for the Phillies. Pat Burrell also went 3-5 and drove in three runs.

Brad Wilkerson continued to impress his potentially future teammates, leading off the game with a homerun to give the Expos a 1-0 lead. Wilkerson has been rumored as one of the players that the Phillies have set their sights on as the trading deadline nears.

The Phillies started hitting starter Scott Downs immediately. Jimmy Rollins and Placido Polanco singled in the bottom of the first and Bobby Abreu walked to load the bases. Jim Thome hit into a fielder's choice to tie the game 1-1, but Downs recovered to end the threat with just one run scoring.

Montreal struck for three runs in the third inning, thanks to an RBI double from Orlando Cabrera, an RBI single from Jose Vidro and a sacrifice fly from Tony Batista. Vidro's hit extended his hitting streak to 18 games.

Everything turned around for the Phillies in the third. Rollins dropped a perfect bunt to lead off the inning and went to second on a throwing error by catcher Einar Diaz. The Phillies then bunched five straight hits, including a two-run single from Burrell and Lieberthal's three-run homerun. When all was said and done, the Phillies had taken a 7-4 lead and knocked Downs out of the game.

The Phillies slowed down a little against Montreal's bullpen, but still put up another three runs. Wolf chipped in with a bases loaded single in the sixth. Lieberthal was thrown out at the plate on the play as the Phillies took a 10-4 lead.

Montreal got one run back on a homerun by Jose Vidro in the top of the eighth inning off reliever Roberto Hernandez.

In the four-game series, the Phillies scored 44 runs, their most in a four-game series since they scored 49 against Pittsburgh in 1932. That includes Wednesday night's game when the Phillies scored just three runs.

Burrell was noticeably hobbled by a sore groin that he suffered in Tuesday night's game. Jim Thome also had ice on his achilles tendon after the game, because of a play at the plate. Thome started to slide and then stopped and scored standing when he realized there was no play at the plate. Thome was limping slightly after the play. "He's a little sore, but hopefully, it's not going to be anything to worry about," admitted Bowa after the game.

The Phillies enter their final interleague series of the season as the Baltimore Orioles come to town for a weekend series. Brett Myers (5-5, 4.93) gets the start in the first game of the series and will be opposed by Baltimore's Matt Riley (1-3, 7.29).
