Late Rally Leads Phillies to Win Over Orioles

Kevin Millwood struggled through 6 1/3 innings of work, but it was enough to keep the Phillies close. After Millwood exited, the Phillies woke up to put together a late inning rally that led them to a 7-6 win. The really good news came when the Marlins lost to Tampa Bay, expanding the Phillies lead in the NL East to two games.

Once again, the Phillies bats needed a wakeup call, but luckily, the call came and the Phillies offense answered.

David Bell delivered a two-run homerun and pinch hitter Tomas Perez came through with an RBI single as the Phillies rallied for three runs in the eighth inning to post a 7-6 win over the Baltimore Orioles.

Erik Bedard, who settled down after a rough beginning to record a career-high ten strikeouts in his longest major league start was relieved in the eighth by Jason Grimsley (3-5). Grimsley retired the first batter he faced, but Jim Thome snapped an 0-for-12 drought with a single before Bell deposited a 1-0 pitch over the left field wall, tying the game at 6-6.

Lieberthal singled and Jason Michaels drew a walk before Grimsley was replaced by B.J. Ryan, whose 2-2 offering was grounded into left field by Perez, plating Lieberthal with the go-ahead run.

Perez's hit made a winner of Rheal Cormier (4-3), who allowed a solo blast by Luis Lopez in 1 2/3 innings. Billy Wagner worked around a walk in the ninth for his 12th save.

The Phillies jumped on Bedard for three runs in the first inning on Placido Polanco's two-run homer and an RBI double by Bell.

The Orioles tagged Philadelphia starter Kevin Millwood for two runs in both the second and third innings to take a 4-3 lead. Miguel Tejada, who was hit by a pitch in the second, responded in the fifth by belting his 15th homer.

Tejada's homerun extended his hitting streak to 18 games.

Pat Burrell had a painful night. He fell into the first row of seats trying to catch a pop-up, was hit in the ribs with a pitch and later fouled a ball off his leg. Burrell stayed in the game even after all the shots he took, but did leave in the ninth inning when Jason Michaels shifted from center field to left field and Doug Glanville came in to play center. There was no immediate word on how serious the injuries may be, but it wouldn't be surprising if Burrell took at least Sunday off.

The series wraps up Sunday with Sidney Ponson (3-11, 6.22) going against Eric Milton (10-2, 4.68).
