Milton Beats Orioles for Eleventh Win

If Eric Milton and Bobby Abreu were trying to impress their way into the National League All-Star Game, they gave it their best on Sunday. Milton notched his league leading 11th win of the season and Abreu had two hits and three RBI as the Phillies beat Baltimore 5-2 to take two out of three games against the Orioles.

Can Bobby Abreu get a little respect?

If Jack McKeon was watching some baseball on satellite during the Marlins rain delay against Tampa Bay, you have to hope that he noticed Bobby Abreu. Abreu went 2-4 with a double, homerun and three RBI. The homerun was Abreu's 17th of the season.

Abreu finished well off the pace in voting for National League outfielders, but is hoping for a spot on the NL bench.

Eric Milton is also hoping for an all-star spot. Milton gave up one earned run over six innings of work to up his record to 11-2. The eleven wins make him the NL's leader in wins and tie him for the major league lead.

The Orioles took a quick but short-lived lead on a solo homerun by Javy Lopez in the second inning. By the time the bottom of the inning was over, the Phillies had taken a 2-1 lead on a double by Chase Utley. The ball was originally called a homerun, but the umpires then awarded Utley a double and allowed two runs to score on the play. Replays showed that the ball hit off the top of the fence and came back into play, meaning that the ball was still in play. First base umpire Dave Aschwege had called the play a homerun.

Abreu homered off starter Sidney Ponson (3-12) in the bottom of the third, pushing the Phillies lead to 3-1.

Milton was somewhat on cruise control until the fifth inning. Baltimore put runners on second and third, but Ponson struck out for the second out of the inning. It looked like Milton might work out of the jam when he got Brian Roberts to ground a ball to third, but David Bell threw wild to first, allowing a run to score. Milton then gave up an infield single to Jerry Hairston before getting Miguel Tejeda to groundout to end the inning with the Phillies up 3-2.

Milton helped get the run back in the bottom of the inning when he led off with a single and moved to second on a base hit by Doug Glanville. Abreu followed with a double to left and both runners scored.

In the seventh, Milton let the first two hitters reach base and exited in favor of Rheal Cormier. The lefty came on and worked out of the jam to preserve the Phillies 5-2 lead.

Roberto Hernandez made it through the eighth and Tim Worrell came on to pitch a perfect ninth and record his ninth save of the season. Larry Bowa didn't go to Billy Wagner because he had thrown two innings in Friday night's game and another on Saturday night.

The Phillies now open up a four-game series in Philadelphia against the Mets, who started the day just two games behind the Phillies in the NL East. Tom Glavine (7-5, 2.16) goes against Paul Abbott (0-2, 5.03) in the series opener Monday night.
