Phils Expand NL East Lead With Win Over Mets

The Phillies and Mets rivalry is taking another turn as the two teams battle for the top spot in the NL East. The Phillies beat Tom Glavine and the Mets in the series opener 6-5, giving the Phillies a three game lead over the Mets and Marlins in the division.

Pat Burrell had a pair of run-scoring hits as the Phillies battled back from an early deficit and beat Tom Glavine and the Mets 6-5 Monday.

Glavine, named to his ninth All-Star team on Sunday, has been plagued with minimal run support this season. The Mets have scored just five runs in his previous three starts, but gave him a three-run cushion in the first he could not hold.

The Phillies bullpen gave manager Larry Bowa 4 1/3 scoreless innings to help the Phillies improve to 6-2 on a 14 game homestand.

Ryan Madson (6-2) pitched two scoreless innings in relief of Paul Abbott and leads all National League rookies in wins. Rheal Cormier and Tim Worrell followed before Billy Wagner worked the ninth for his 13th save.

"I was in the right spot at the right time, I guess," Madson said. "I'm just doing my job. Coming in as the early guy and trying to get some outs."

Cliff Floyd drove in four runs for the Mets, who had their four-game winning streak snapped.

The Mets jumped on Abbott early as Kaz Matsui reached on a throwing error by shortstop Jimmy Rollins and scored on Floyd's 12th homer. Richard Hidalgo followed with his eighth homer in 16 games since joining the Mets. Hidalgo also set a club record by homering in his fifth straight game.

The Phillies answered quickly with two runs in the second and four more in the second. Burrell singled home a run in the first and David Bell followed with an RBI double.

The trouble continued for Glavine (7-6) an inning later when the Phils put runners on second and third on a single by Jason Michaels and a one-out double by Rollins. Placido Polanco tied the game with a sacrifice fly and the Phillies followed with three straight two-out hits.

Bobby Abreu delivered an RBI single and Jim Thome and Burrell had RBI doubles. The inning could have been worse for Glavine if not for left fielder Floyd, who made a running catch on Bell before crashing into the wall.

Glavine allowed 10 hits in six-plus innings in his worst outing of the season.

The Mets cut the deficit to one run in the fifth on a two-run single by Floyd that finished Abbott, who was charged with five runs - two earned - and four hits in 4 2/3 innings.

Polanco, Rollins and Abreu each have hit safely in 10 straight games.

The series continues Tuesday night when Al Leiter (4-2, 2.12) goes against Randy Wolf (3-3, 3.08)
