Leiter Shuts Down Phillies Offense

Al Leiter has quietly put together the best ERA in the National League and he showed why as he dazzled Phillies hitters Tuesday night in a Mets 4-1 win. Offensively, the combination of Richard Hidalgo and Cliff Floyd continued to pummel Phillies pitching. Meanwhile, Randy Wolf became the latest Phillies pitcher to make an early exit, leaving after 4 2/3 innings of work.

Richard Hidalgo took advantage of an unselfish act by teammate Cliff Floyd.

Hidalgo produced in the cleanup spot and Al Leiter worked seven strong innings, leading the New York Mets to a 4-1 win over the Phillies.

The Mets' hottest hitter, Hidalgo moved from the fifth spot in the order into the cleanup role. With Phillies southpaw Randy Wolf on the mound, the lefthanded-hitting Floyd moved from fourth to fifth. The move came at the suggestion of Floyd, who has admittedly struggled against lefties this season.

Hidalgo, who had homered in a club-record five straight games, delivered a run-scoring triple in the third inning and an RBI single in the fifth, when the Mets scored twice to take a 3-1 lead.

Since being acquired from Houston, Hidalgo is batting .348 (23-for-66) with eight homers and 15 RBI in 17 games.

A New Jersey native who was pitching in front of his mother and brothers, Leiter (5-2) gave up one run and three hits with three walks and three strikeouts en route to his 150th career win.

Leiter has given up two or fewer runs in 11 of his 14 starts and has a 2.05 ERA.

Mike Stanton and Ricky Bottalico each recorded an out in the eighth before Braden Looper got the final four for his 17th save in 19 chances.

Kaz Matsui also remained hot for the Mets, going 3-for-5 and scoring twice. Matsui is 11-for-24 with two homers, five RBI and 13 runs scored in his last six games.

Wolf (3-4) labored through 4 2/3 innings, allowing three runs and nine hits. He walked three, struck out four and threw 111 pitches.

Wolf drove in his team's lone run with a groundout in the third.

The Phillies had a three-game winning streak stopped and fell to 6-3 on a 14-game homestand.

The series continues with Steve Trachsel (8-6, 3.49) going against Brett Myers (5-5, 5.28) on Wednesday night.
