Phils Can't Figure Out Hampton in 4-0 Loss

For the first time in the history of Citizens Bank Park, the Phillies were shutout at home. Mike Hampton and John Smoltz combined to lead Atlanta to a 4-0 win. All of the Braves runs - and all ten of their runs in the series - came on homeruns. Saturday, it was a rookie outfielder doing the damage.

A little known Braves rookie, Charles Thomas, made himself a little better known Saturday. Thomas hit two homeruns and made a spectacular catch as the Braves beat the Phillies 4-0 at Citizens Bank Park.

Mike Hampton (4-8) allowed five hits over eight innings of work. It was Hampton's longest outing since May. On the other side, Paul Abbott (0-3) allowed two earned runs on five hits in six innings of work for the Phillies.

Thomas, playing in left field, hit a solo homerun off Abbott in the fifth inning and a two-run shot off Rheal Cormier in the seventh. Thomas had four homeruns this season at AAA Richmond before being called up and has hit three major league homeruns for Atlanta.

Rafael Furcal, who hit a disputed homerun on Friday night, came close to another dispute when he hit a long fly ball down the right field line. This one was a little further foul than the one that he hit Friday night and was appropriately ruled foul. Later though, Furcal delivered a solo homerun off Abbott, giving Atlanta a 2-0 lead.

The Phillies managed just five hits, all of them singles, and got just two walks from Braves pitchers.

John Smoltz, who blew a save Friday night when he gave up a solo homerun to Chase Utley, pitched a perfect ninth in a non-save situation.
