Phillies Rebound for 5-1 Win in New York

While Jim Thome and Bobby Abreu led the offensive side of things, Kevin Millwood handled the pitching as the Phillies rebounded for a 5-1 win over the Mets Friday night at Shea Stadium. Millwood threw seven strong innings to snap the Phillies three-game losing skid and put them back into sole possession of first place in the National League East.

Kevin Millwood looked like the pitcher the Phillies had hoped they acquired from the Atlanta Braves, while Jim Thome and Bobby Abreu belted homeruns as the Phillies came back from a disappointing loss in Thursday night's game to pick up a 5-1 win over the Mets.

Millwood (7-5) has had a disappointing season for the Phillies, starting the year with consecutive losses and later enduring a stretch of seven straight starts without a victory.

Maybe Millwood just needs to face the Mets more often. His best outing of the year came against the Mets on June 1, when he pitched seven scoreless innings while allowing just four hits. He was nearly as good in this one, yielding one run and three hits with four walks and six strikeouts over seven innings.

Thome gave Millwood all the support he needed in the third inning, swatting his major league-leading 29th homer - a two-run shot off New York starter Jae Seo. The shot hit the scoreboard beyond the right-center field wall, traveling an estimated 435 feet.

The Mets put a run on the board with back-to-back doubles from Jose Reyes and Kaz Matsui in the fifth inning, making it a 2-1 game.

Abreu pushed the Phillies lead back to two runs with a solo homerun to start the eighth inning off reliever Mike Stanton. The homerun gave Abreu six straight seasons with 20 homers and 20 stolen bases.

Thome and Abreu struck again in the ninth with RBI singles, giving the Phillies a 5-1 advantage.

Billy Wagner retired all five batters he faced for his 14th save.

Starting in place of veteran Scott Erickson, Seo (4-6) pitched well, surrendering two runs and six hits in a season-high seven innings. The Korean right-hander walked two and struck out five.

Erickson, who has been sidelined all season with a hamstring injury, was expected to be activated from the disabled list and make his first major league start since August 31, 2002. But manager Art Howe elected to go with Seo after his bullpen pitched 5 1/3 innings Thursday.
