Cormier Comes Up Big In Phillies 8-2 Win

Rheal Cormier bailed Randy Wolf out of a big jam and the Phillies bullpen hung on from there as the Phillies eventually pulled away for an 8-2 win over the Mets. The Phillies bullpen pitched 4 2/3 strong innings of relief and Jim Thome gave them some late game insurance.

Randy Wolf ran out of gas in the sixth inning, but luckily for him and the Phillies, Rheal Cormier had more than enough gas to come to the rescue.

The inning started with the Phillies leading 4-1. Wolf (4-5) struck out Richard Hidalgo to start the inning and it appeared that Wolf would continue to breeze through the Mets lineup as he did through the first five innings. Cliff Floyd doubled, Ty Wigginton singled and Mike Cameron walked to load the bases for the Mets. Wolf went 2-0 on Jason Phillips and Larry Bowa decided to change pitchers in mid-at bat. Cormier came on and got Phillips to ground into an inning ending double play, preserving the Phillies 4-1 lead. Cormier also put down the Mets in order in the seventh.

Tim Worrell gave up a solo homerun to Mike Piazza - his first in his last 75 at bats - as the Mets cut the Phillies lead to 4-2.

The Phillies took a 3-0 lead in the second inning, off starter Tom Glavine (7-8). Jim Thome led off the inning with a double and was still at second base two outs later. Tomas Perez, playing at third base, singled to drive in Thome, although replays showed that he may have been out at the plate. The Mets then intentionally walked Doug Glanville and an error by Ty Wigginton on a ball hit by Wolf, loaded the bases with two outs. Jimmy Rollins then doubled to drive in two runs and put the Phillies up 3-0.

An inning later, Jim Thome singled and scored on a Mike Lieberthal double.

The Mets put runners on first and second with two outs in the bottom of the fourth and Mike Cameron poked a single into right-center to score the Mets first run and make it a 4-1 game.

Jose Parra came on to pitch the ninth and got Rollins to start the inning before he walked Placido Polanco. Bobby Abreu singled before Thome launched his major league leading 30th homerun off Parra. The Phillies put runners on second and third with two outs and scored a final run on an error by Kaz Matsui, taking their 8-2 lead.

Ryan Madson gave up two two-out singles in the ninth before getting Piazza to line out to Rollins to end the game.

The series continues Sunday with Brett Myers (5-6, 5.68) going against Al Leiter (5-3, 2.40).
