Leiter and Cameron Combine to Beat Phils 6-1

The Mets got six shutout innings from Al Leiter and a big day on offense and defense from Mike Cameron as the Mets beat the Phillies 6-1. The win gave the two teams a split of their four game series and sank the Phillies into a first-place tie with Atlanta as they head south to play the Braves at Turner Field.

Al Leiter (6-3) allowed just four hits and two walks in six innings of work as the Mets beat the Phillies 6-1 Sunday afternoon at Shea Stadium. Leiter is now 8-0 at Shea since the 2003 all-star break.

Leiter got some defensive help from center fielder Mike Cameron, who made solid plays to halt Phillies scoring opportunities. Cameron also contributed with a solo homerun and finished the day with two runs scored and two RBI. Cameron hit his 15th homerun of the season and Vance Wilson hit his third as the Mets went up 2-0 in the fifth inning off starter Brett Myers (5-7).

Cameron and Wilson also drove in runs in the sixth, when Cameron walked with the bases loaded and Wilson singled to drive in a run.

Myers lasted 5 1/3 innings and allowed four earned runs as his ERA moved up to 5.74 for the season. Roberto Hernandez pitched a scoreless 2/3 of an inning and Geoff Geary gave the Phillies two innings of relief, allowing two unearned runs.

The Phillies only run came on a bases loaded walk to Jimmy Rollins in the seventh inning. The Phillies loaded the bases with one out, but pinch-hitter Tomas Perez popped out for the second out of the inning and after Rollins' walk, Placido Polanco then grounded out on one pitch from reliever Dan Wheeler.

The Mets tacked on two unearned runs in the eighth thanks in part to a throwing error on Geary.

Closer Braden Looper got the final four outs for his 19th save of the season.

The Phillies open a short two-game series in Atlanta Monday night. Paul Abbott (0-3, 4.45) goes against Mike Hampton (4-8, 5.11). The Tuesday night game will feature Eric Milton against Jaret Wright. The two teams enter the series tied at the top of the NL East standings.
