Abbott Survives to Get First Win as a Phillie

Paul Abbott lost his first four decisions as a member of the Phillies and had dropped eight straight decisions coming into Saturday's game. Abbott was able to turn the tide against the Cubs and lasted just long enough to notch the win as the Phillies beat the Cubs 4-3.

While the Cubs used more longballs, the Phillies settled for piecing together runs and came away with a 4-3 win over the Cubs.

Paul Abbott (1-4) notched his first win as a Phillie, but his highlight of the day came when he singled home two runs in the Phillies half of the fourth inning to put the Phils up 4-2 at the time. Cubs starter Carlos Zambrano (9-6) looked like he might pitch out of a fourth inning jam as Abbott came to the plate. The Phillies had plated one run on an RBI single from Ricky Ledee and had the bases loaded with one out when Zambrano struck out Todd Pratt. Abbott then lined a single to center scoring two runs.

"Dying for a win? That's an understatement," Abbott said. "I definitely needed to get that one out of the way. It was worth the wait. I'm an official Phillie now."

Both teams scored in the first inning. Sammy Sosa hit his 20th homerun of the season off Abbott in the first to give the Cubs an early 1-0 lead. The Phillies tied the game in the bottom of the inning by manufacturing a run. Jimmy Rollins reached on an infield single and was balked to second by Zambrano. Placido Polanco then bunted Rollins to third and Bobby Abreu grounded out with Rollins scoring on the play.

Derrek Lee hit his second homerun in as many nights, giving the Cubs a 2-1 lead in the fourth. The final Cubs run would also come on a solo homerun off the bat of Aramis Ramirez in the sixth. Ramirez' homerun would end Abbott's day after he lasted 5 1/3 innings, giving up seven hits - three of them homeruns - two walks and striking out one.

With closer Billy Wagner nursing a sore left shoulder, Tim Worrell was called on not just to save the game, but to give the Phillies two innings of work. The Cubs were threatening in the eighth, but a great defensive play by Polanco started a double play and wiped out the Cubs' threat. "Polanco might be as good a second baseman as there is defensively," Larry Bowa remarked after the game. "Not only was it a great play, it took a bad hop at the end."

Pinch-hitter Tom Goodwin opened the ninth with a double, but was stranded on base. Worrell struck out Sosa to end the game.

The series concludes Sunday afternoon with Mark Prior (2-2, 4.06) coming off the DL to make a start against Eric Milton (11-2, 4.58).
