You Guessed It! Another Loss to the Marlins

Again, the Phillies battled from a deficit to tie the Marlins, only to have the game wind up the same as the last 13 that they've played in Miami; a loss. The Marlins pulled away from the Phillies and won 6-3 in a game that was delayed twice by rain. This time, it was Hee Seop Choi coming to the rescue for the Marlins.

At times, the Phillies look like a team destined to snap their Miami Jinx. Then, they snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

Hee Seop Choi delivered a three-run eighth inning homerun off Tim Worrell (3-4) to beat the Phillies 6-3 Wednesday night. The homerun ruined a Phillies' comeback after they had fallen behind 3-0 to the Marlins.

Once again, part of the problem was Juan Pierre and Luis Castillo. Pierre led off the Marlins' first inning with a single and Castillo delivered another single to put runners on first and third. Starter Brett Myers got Mike Lowell to hit into a double play, but Pierre scored on the play as the Marlins took a 1-0 lead.

In the third, Pierre stepped to the plate with two outs and delivered a single up the middle and then stole second. Castillo walked and Lowell doubled to drive in both runners as the Marlins expanded their lead to 3-0.

Myers lasted five innings, allowing three earned runs on six hits and four walks. He struck out five. Brian Powell pitched a perfect sixth inning and Josh Hancock, just back from AAA Scranton Wilkes-Barre, gave up a walk, but nothing else in the seventh.

The Phillies chipped away at the Marlins' 3-0 lead.

Bobby Abreu led off the fourth with a double and moved to third on Jim Thome's groundout. Pat Burrell then grounded out to score Abreu with the first run.

In the sixth, back-to-back singles from Placido Polanco and Abreu put runners on first and third and knocked starter Brad Penny out of the game. Thome singled to make it a 3-2 game, but reliever Aaron Small got Pat Burrell and Ricky Ledee to fly out and got David Bell to hit into a fielder's choice.

The Phillies tied the game in the eighth with a two-out double from Burrell that scored Polanco, who had singled.

Worrell came on to pitch the eighth and hit Lowell with a pitch, but struck out Castillo and Miguel Cabrera for the first two outs of the inning. Jeff Conine walked and then Choi delivered his blast to put the Marlins up 6-3.

Josias Manzanillo (3-2) pitched the last 1 1/3 innings to get the win.

The series wraps up Thursday afternoon with Paul Abbott (1-4, 4.91) going against Dontrelle Willis (7-6, 4.01).
