Bell Comes Up Big, Millwood Comes Up Hurt

Padres' closer Trevor Hoffman enters the game to the tune of AC/DC's Hell's Bells. He left Thursday night's game thinking about David Bell. The Phillies third baseman delivered a game winning two-run single in the tenth to beat the Padres 5-3 and give the Phillies a sweep of San Diego.

The Phillies did something that only four other teams have done this season - they scored against San Diego Padres closer Trevor Hoffman.

David Bell hit a two-out, two-run single in the tenth inning to help the Phillies complete a three-game sweep of the Padres with a 5-3 win.

After Hoffman (2-2) struck out pinch-hitter Chase Utley to start the tenth, Jimmy Rollins singled through the right side of the infield and Placido Polanco followed with a ground-rule double to the gap in left-center field. Hoffman intentionally walked Bobby Abreu to load the bases before striking out Jim Thome.

Bell, who knocked in the winning run with a two-run homerun on Wednesday, followed with a single that dropped in front of a diving Brian Giles in right field, securing Philadelphia's first series sweep in San Diego since May 25-27, 1987.

Phillies starter Kevin Millwood surrendered run-scoring hits to Giles and Terrence Long in the first and left after two innings due to inflammation in his pitching elbow. He will be re-evaluated Friday before a decision is made on his availability for his next start.

Doug Glanville and Marlon Byrd each knocked in a run in the second inning to tie the game at 2-2, but Giles lifted a sacrifice fly to left in the fifth to give the Padres the lead.

In the sixth inning, Polanco drew Philadelphia even when he slammed a solo homerun to left field off Padres' starter Sterling Hitchcock, who allowed three runs and four hits in six innings. Hitchcock was making his first start of the season after spending the first half on the disabled list, walked two and struck out two.

Six Philadelphia relievers combined to allow just one run in eight innings.

Felix Rodriguez (4-5) pitched a scoreless ninth to pick up his first win as a member of the Phillies and Tim Worrell worked the tenth for his 13th save.

San Diego has lost four straight and five of its last six.

The loss dropped the Padres to a season-high 6 1/2 games behind the first-place Dodgers in the National League West Division. The Phillies open a three-game series with LA on Friday night.

The win put the Phillies at 4-6 on their longest road trip of the season, with three games remaining.

Randy Wolf (4-7, 4.01) goes against Kaz Ishii (11-5, 4.46) in the opener of the series with the Dodgers Friday night.
