Too Little, Too Late as Phillies Fall to Dodgers

The Phillies were having trouble even getting a ball out of the infield against Dodgers' starter Odalis Perez. Finally, Perez left, but that left the Phillies to battle the best bullpen in the league. The Phillies mounted a mini-comeback, but it wasn't enough as the Dodgers held on for a 6-3 win over the Phillies.

Considering that Phillies pitchers walked a total of 11 Dodgers and hit one other hitter with a pitch, it's probably a little surprising that the Dodgers only scored six runs.

Paul Abbott (1-6) escaped problems early, but by the time he left the game after 5 2/3 innings, he had walked nine hitters. Thankfully, he also got two double play balls to get him out of jams.

The Dodgers put together a rally in the fourth inning, but it was cut short by a baserunning blunder by Milton Bradley. The Phillies doubled Bradley off second when the Dodgers had runners on first and second with nobody out. A double from Hee Seop Choi scored one run and another scored on the play when Placido Polanco threw to second rather than watching the runner rounding third.

Two innings later, two more walks - including one to Bradley with the bases loaded - helped the Dodgers to two more runs and a 4-0 lead. Reliever Geoff Geary came on with the bases loaded and two outs and got Adrian Beltre to line out to right field to end the threat.

Shawn Green homered off Geary to start the seventh and later in the inning, an error on David Bell led to the Dodgers sixth run of the game.

Odalis Perez (5-4) left after seven shutout innings, allowing just four hits and two walks. The Phillies put up a run in the eighth when Marlon Byrd reached on an infield single and went to second on an error by Alex Cora. Lou Collier, who entered the game as part of a double-swtich, singled to right in his first at bat as a Phillie to score Cora and make it a 6-1 game.

The Dodgers figured to coast through the ninth inning with Darren Dreifort coming on to pitch. Instead, Jim Thome led off the inning with his 33rd homerun of the season. Dreifort got the next two hitters, but then gave up another solo homerun to pinch-hitter Chase Utley. It was Utley's third pinch-hit homerun of the season. Byrd delivered another single and the Dodgers went to closer Eric Gagne. Gagne quickly got Collier to ground out to end the game, recording his 33rd save of the season.

The Phillies and Dodgers wrap up their season series Sunday when Brett Myers (6-8, 5.38) goes against Brad Penny (9-8, 2.97). The game also wraps up the Phillies longest road trip of the season - 13 games - which started with them going 1-6. They are now 5-7 on the trip.
