Padilla Returns; Phillies Don't

For the second night in a row, the Phillies let the Rockies back in the game and then didn't have enough to mount a comeback of their own. The game did mark the return of Vicente Padilla, who returned from the DL and gave the Phillies five strong innings, allowing just one run. The loss dropped the Phillies' home record to 29-27 on the season.

All eyes were on Vicente Padilla as he took the mound for the Phillies Tuesday night against the Rockies. Padilla had been on the DL since May 30th, but looked like he hadn't missed a beat. Padilla gave the Phillies five strong innings. The only real blemish came in the top of the fifth when Padilla gave up a solo homerun to Jeromy Burnitz that tied the game 1-1. Padilla allowed three hits, struck out five and didn't walk a batter.

The Phillies went up 1-0 in the second. Mike Lieberthal led off the inning with a double and went to third on a sacrifice fly by Chase Utley. Jason Michaels walked and Marlon Byrd delivered another sacrifice fly, scoring Lieberthal.

Amaury Telemaco gave up a solo homerun to Charles Johnson in the seventh inning that put the Rockies up 2-1.

It looked like the Phillies were prepared to come from behind and weren't phased by the Rockies one run lead. Jason Michaels matched the Rockies homeruns with a solo homerun of his own and the game was again tied. One inning later, Bobby Abreu singled, stole second and then scored when Lieberthal drove a single through the middle and the Phillies were up 3-2 and needed just three outs to put away the win.

Vinny Castilla came off the bench to deliver a two-run double and then scored on a sacrifice fly to give Colorado a 5-3 lead. Castilla's double went over the head of Abreu. Ironically, bench coach Gary Varsho was trying to move Abreu deeper just before the pitch was made.

Shawn Chacon notched his second save in as many nights, giving him 28 on the season. Steve Reed (3-2) pitched one inning and gave up a run, but recorded the win. Tim Worrell (3-5) took the loss.

The series continues Wednesday night with Randy Wolf (4-7, 4.04) going against Jason Jennings (5-9, 5.86).
